Hello, Meat Poultry People,
This query is for you. I am closing in the the date when I process my first chickens. I feel pretty confident in the processing steps involved in dispatching and cleaning the birds. The grey area for me is the several hours holding time before processing...
I am joining the party one day late. My Buff Orpington just took 14 fertile Barbezieux eggs. I am hoping to start a dual purpose flock.
Happy spring everyone.
I never noticed that before, they do have similar coloring. It really is a kick to see the mothering instinct kick in between a dog and chicken.
Thanks for sharing.
Marigold, my little Delaware, was sitting on my knee. She then hopped on my dog Sitka's back. I couldn't believe Sitka stayed there patiently while the little chick perched on her back.
This is a picture of two of our Trader Joe chicks. My two grandkids took Trader Joe fertile eggs and placed them under Sugar, our Buff Orpington. The eggs took 28 days to hatch, one week longer. Of the 12 eggs placed under Sugar, 7 hatched!
These are two of our Trader Joe fertile egg chicks that our Buff Orpinton, Sugar hatched. Our two oldest grandkids, ages 7 and 9, introduced the eggs to Sugar's nest. It was a fun project for everyone.
We are gearing up to raise meat birds, mostly chickens and a few turkeys. I want to purchase a plucker that can handle both. Anybody have a unit that works for both?
Thanks for your help.
Hi,
I agree about the giant cochins. They are such sweet tempered birds.
We are getting two weaner pigs to raise for meat in March. Our adult chickens free range in the pasture that the pigs will be in. Anybody experience trouble with the two critters meeting?
Thanks!
I would love to join in the fun. I have 6 hens and 1 rooster. The two who usually go broody are my buff orpington and giant cohchin. Hopefully, they will get in the spirit of things and we can be a part of your Hatch-A-Long.

We live by a creek, in a small town of 400, in northern CA. I suspect it was a fox but am not certain. It puts a whole new meaning to Ronald Dahl's book Fantastic Mr. Fox!
I heard of a chicken farmer who raises a breed of dog to protect his flock. -Thought it might be something to...
Thanks Bigwig. We are zoned for chickens but no roos. I think I solved the problem of the hawk with the wire but still have a predator. Glad you roo protects the girls.
I am a believer in free-range chicken management. Due to predators I have had to adjust that vision.
After finding nothing but feathers littered on the ground in a 4' radius I restricted their habitat. To protect from hawks I created a 40' X 26' pen that included my compost pile and the hen...
I have a variety of egg/meat chickens. My chickens matured around 5 months, depending on the breed. The fastest growing chickens in my flock are my 2 Delawares. They not only grew fast but are larger and heavier breeds. A red comb and full-feathers were visible when the began laying. The...
