    swollen comb with black spots

I've been putting neosporin on every day for about a week now. The comb's not looking much better but also not any worse, which is good. She's still not showing any other signs of illness and acting totally normal, so I'm hoping the swelling is just from a pecking injury that may have gotten...

    swollen comb with black spots

I don't think it's frost bite - we're in southwest Texas and lately have had 60 to 70 degree days, though hovering around freezing at night. But this didn't seem to be a problem earlier in the winter when we really did have some good freezes.

    Feather Plucking *HELP* UPDATE

One other way to help with boredom: throw a cabbage or aluminum pie dish in their coop. They'll peck at it for awhile instead of each other.

    Feather Plucking *HELP* UPDATE

Separating her would be a big help - do you even have a dog or cat crate you could keep her in for awhile? Putting Blue Kote, Hot Pick, and/or Pine Tar on the picked spot can help; Pine Tar is gross stuff but is the most effective. Also adding AviaCharge to their water, in case it's a nutrition...

    swollen comb with black spots

I have a 6-month-old Speckled Sussex hen, Shug, with a very swollen comb. I noticed the comb swelling yesterday, and today there was some blood and black crusty stuff in spots. The black stuff has actually been there a few days and has appeared in recent weeks on combs of a few other hens and on...

Chook has a limp - any suggestions welcomed - Update 3/16

I'm still pretty new to chickens, but for what it's worth, I've had a few limping episodes in my little flock. They were all alarming because of how listless the chicks got; I kept wondering if it was some other ailment. In one case, I eventually found a tiny splinter on her foot, but for all...

Newbie owner with sick bird..not sure what to do.

I'm fairly new to chicken-keeping myself, so can't help with most of your quandary. But I do recommend Blue Kote for covering feather-picked areas, like it sounds like you're seeing on her neck. I always have it on hand for things like that, as well as pine tar. If I still see anyone picking at...

    feather eater, pscyho or curable?

Thanks for the link basicliving. Very helpful and nice website too. And yes, more and more I wonder if this chicken is a bad egg, and my mom already diagnosed her as just being a four-letter word. I'm learning this is the downside of being a vegetarian chicken raiser - my freezer isn't an...

    feather eater, pscyho or curable?

No lights in the coop now, though at the time Bachira the Feather Picker started her nasty habit, I did have a heat lamp on at night for them. I've wondered about her being at the bottom of the totem pole. There are two feeders in the coop, but I notice she usually hangs back while the others...

    feather eater, pscyho or curable?

Thanks for the responses. I have 15 chickens in the coop, which is 16x16ft, but for most of the morning they also roam around a small pasture, which is about 50x25ft. I'm pretty limited with feed options out here in West Texas unfortunately - the Purina Start and Grow, which is 18% protein, is...

    feather eater, pscyho or curable?

I have a 3-mo-old golden-laced wyandotte (Bachira) that started picking and eating her flockmates' feathers about two weeks ago, during a particularly bad bout of weather when they were all cooped up in their house. I tried giving her Aviacharge, yogurt and boiled egg yolks in case it was a...

    Has Anyone Seen This Before?

I recently had a 2-mo-old Ameraucana with very similar symptoms. I was instructed to feel the leg that seemed to be hurt, and sure enough it felt warmer than the other, which apparently is a sign of injury. I kept my chick isolated for most of the day and night in a kennel inside the main coop...

    Limping chicken!

I had an Ameraucana who recently injured her leg. I put her in a kennel inside the coop - so she could see the other chickens - and a few times a day I gave her some vitamin water and gave her boiled egg yolk and yogurt. It took her about two weeks to get back to normal, but now she's just fine...

    impacted crop questions

thanks for the aspirin suggestion. how can i tell if there's an infection? if it is "just" a hurt leg, any idea how long such things take to heal? everyone's currently eating purina start and grow crumbles, plus treats like corn, greens, yogurt, etc. i've been giving captain ahab boiled egg...

    impacted crop questions

Ah ha! Her right leg is warmer than the other, and she's definitely picking up her right foot a lot whenever I pull her down to eat. Any tips for healing an injured chick leg?

    impacted crop questions

Thanks a bunch. I checked her throat and it looked fine. I'm starting to think she may have just injured her leg. She leans to one side when she's on the roost and picks up her right foot a lot whenever I put her on the ground. She's also not gotten any worse and no one else has shown any...

    impacted crop questions

Thanks so much for the responses. I kept her in a kennel without food last night and gave her some of the ACV water. Her droppings look totally normal - light brown with white caps. This morning she came out running and went straight to the feeder, but again, after a little while she retired to...

    impacted crop questions

Hi all, I'm pretty new to BYC and to chickens, and my favorite chick (Captain Ahab) is having a problem that I suspect is impacted crop. Capt. Ahab's a 2-month-old Ameraucana and for the past day or two she has been increasingly lethargic, droopy head and tail, keeping to her roost, not running...

    lethargic, droopy-winged, one-week-old Ameraucana

I have 15 new chicks - all one week old as of Wednesday. They have all been doing very well so far - living on pine shavings, eating medicated chick starter, and drinking water with Quick Chik. I've also been feeding them tiny bits of yogurt mixed with chick crumbles every day or two. Yesterday...
