I've seen it a couple times. It's usually when there is something new to him that he stomps and displays at it. The most recent was a envelope I dropped in the way back with the mail. The hen didn't seem to even care but all the chickens came running to him to see what he had.

One of my roosters is losing his comb. It never turned black and doesn't look necrotic it's just disappearing. These pictures were taking 2 weeks apart the second is a screenshot of a video.
They're pretty tough. I would slap some neosporin on it and keep him seperated untill it has healed up. The other chickens will peck at if its bleeding
My gobbler started strutting pretty much around the same time he was fully feathered. He was a bit bigger than yours but he is an artesian gold. He gobbled for the first time today that I heard. I got him early April from southern states during their chick days.
So out of about 100 chicken eggs 1 hatched... A rooster... That got eaten by a hawk a month later... Then I tried quail. 120 eggs none hatched... Another round of quail with a couple turkey eggs we found (cutting hay we ran over the nest and killed the mom 9 survived) guesstimated hatch date...
