Well, we will be butchering all the older ones this week, so hopefully that IS the problem and will fix it. I hate to see my old girls go. They were all hatched in my kitchen, and some are going on six-years-old. I know I should have done it so much sooner, but I let my heart get in the way!
Sorry for the long delay in getting back, we do not have internet at home (by choice).
I've thought of an egg eater, but the only way a four-legged critter could get into the coop would be to climb an eight-foot fence, and only during the day, when I am home and can hear everything going on...
Very early this Spring, my mom and I went halves on pullets. I raised them inside until they were big enough to go outside. We split them up, my mom's went to her house, and mine went out with my older girls. Out of her 6 hens, she gets 4 eggs a day. Out of mine, even with my older ones (two...
With the cold, I had to bring my smallest guys in. There were five silkies, and one EE, all around four months old. They just couldn't handle the 0 temps we had last week. When I brought them in, I noticed that the smallest silkie was sick. She was very weak and lethargic. I gave them the...
So far, so good with Madea. She's still less then thrilled, but she's getting better. She won't completely lay on her side now, she does take a few steps on her own. But as far as walking long distances...anything over 5 feet...she refuses. She's kinda like a puppy, she sits down, and expects to...
I am going to have to check them out! I bought a small harness and a leash today, and tried her out on it when I was getting my son off the bus today. The look on the bus driver's face was priceless!
However, Madea was less than thrilled. She just laid over on her side and looked at me like...
LOL!! I probably will! Like most chickens, she loves anything that sparkles. My eight-year-old daughter says whatever we get her, has to have some "Blingage"! My husband just rolls his eyes!
That's one reason why I would want her on a leash! My dogs know not to mess with the chickens...although our lab loves barreling through them like a bowling ball. He's a nut. The chickens freaked him out one time. When he came running, the chickens just stayed put. He didn't know what to do...
My white silke roo is a pain. He attacks my daughter, and attacked me once. He has never made the attempt to attack my husband, because he knows my husband is one bad dude. And once I showed the roo that I was bigger than him, he has never tried to attack me again. Just show him who is boss.
Okay. A little back story... Out of the blue a month or so ago, we had a black silkie chick hatch in the incubator. Nothing was supposed to hatch so I'm assuming the kids put the egg in there. The poor little thing imprinted on me, like most of the chickies do. But, she has been something...
Thanks everyone! I'm going to try to borrow a few incubators from a friend, and use mine for my cabinet incubator. I found a cabinet yesterday after calling my Dad!! WooHoo, it'll be less money that I have to spend! Of course it will need some work, but I'm no stranger to that.
I think I'm...
Okay, so I have two of the nifty (sarcasm) little Styrofoam 'bators. I say nifty (with sarcasm) because they are hard as all get-out to clean, they have no class, and I have WAY too many eggs for the both of them to handle. Also, I set one out on the back porch a couple of weeks ago to clean...
UPDATE!!!
I have been giving Morti her vitamins and all her tasty goodies she loves so well, plus chick feed and yogurt (not her favorite).
Yesterday, I got her out to take pictures. I FINALLY got my camera working.
She wasn't nearly as swollen or bruised looking, but I had to set her down to...
Update on Morti. I put her in a cage by herself in the building where we keep the feed.
She is eating and drinking, going after the food like she has never eaten before.
She still cannot stand up and is very weak. I can just touch her and she falls over.
She has pooped-lots. And it looks...
Several years ago, we had several mallard duck beheaded in one night. Very little blood was left. They were just beheaded and left on the pond bank. We were told it could have been a weasel or something like that. Recently, we had several chickens done the same way. In that instance, I caught a...
I went out to feed my flocks and just so noticed a Turken hen (Mortisha) stumbling, like she just couldn't keep her balance. She kept wanting to fall backwards. I went on and watered, and then fed. Another hen bumped into her, and she fell down, so I reached in and took her. The rooster Gomez is...
