    Safe to eat hay?

I put a flake of alfalfa hay in with my chickens reguralarly. They love it. The devour the leaves and light stems right away, so there's nothing left to get moldy or gross. If you want to give your chickens some alfalfa, just monitor how much they can consume in one sitting, leaving only coarse...

    Help! Rooster troubles

If it was me, I'd remove all 3 males. If your birds don't free range on a regular basis, they don't need a rooster looking out for them. The only reason your flock needs boys, is if you want to breed. Since your birds are clutch mates, you don't want them breeding together anyways. However, if...

What breed are these four hens!

I'd say those are game chickens. All mixed up, most likely, but most if not all are games-even the bearded ones... I think they have muff blood, rather than EE or ameracauna. The spurred hen thing is super cool!

To Heat or not Heat my Coop

I've never heated my coops, either. We have -30 temps here and our birds always winter over well.

Topic of the Week - Roosters, Yes or No?

    - Is a rooster beneficial to the flock? I think so, especially with flocks in a free range environment. We keep several roosters free ranging with a couple dozen hens and pullets, and a handful of cockerels. There isn't nearly as much tension as you might expect. They tend form little families...

    Mean Rooster

Spot on advice from the tough love crowd. He'll push you as far as you allow. Roosters fight, it's what they understand. You have to fight him, and win- it's the only way he'll quit. There's nothing cruel about it, just rooster psychology. Kicking the rooster has always worked best for me. Not...

Not sure of sex can anyone help

No question on sex. Best not to leave fluffy lonely though. I'd wait until your next batch catches up a bit and let her join the other pullets.

Not sure of sex can anyone help

Little and Red are both cockerels. Fluffy is a pullet. Look at the difference in the size and color of their combs and wattles. And Little has some seriously well developed shanks! They look a little young to be crowing yet, but I've some boys will start as early as 5 weeks, so you never know!

    Ascites went wrong

I've dealt with ascites too. It's awful. Assuming you didn't puncture an organ, you probably didn't screw up at all. if you necropsy a bird that's died of ascites, you'll see how severe the damage to the heart and lungs is by the time the fluid begins to accumulate... The truth is, that once you...
