    Adult Color

Thanks so much! I'm pretty sure the one little guy is a violet. And looking at the chart, the one I have thought of as brown is probably a slate. Both of them are clear in these pictures. (first meal of boiled egg yolk which accounts for the yellow speckles on them)There are ten all together but...

    Adult Color

So squiggly lines on their head means at least partially pearled? That's great to know! I'll have to look at the others. I know the brown is just brown, all over, no line anywhere. And past ones like it have been brown adults. Thanks. I'll go look at a picture of a violet. The first ones were...

    Adult Color

I have a hen who has just hatched keets. The eggs are from my guineas which are descended from some babies I got at a flea market several years ago---your basic mutts. The originals were all pearl grey as are these parents with one of the three mother having a white chest. In the past they have...

    can chickens eat citrus

Just FYI, potato peelings are NOT toxic to chickens. Mine eat them all the time. There are toxins in them if they are green--- "sunburned"--- but I saw someplace a calculation that a chicken would have to eat several pounds for them to be deadly. Potato plants, the green leafy tops are not a...

    Good treats for baby chicks?

Think mother hen...have you sever seen one cut up seed or peal a grape. Or anything else? Baby chicks are built to eat whatever their mother finds..bugs, seeds, grapes...

How To Tell If Guinea Eggs Are Fertile

Thanks. I cracked one egg a couple of days. It strikes me as infertile...I see more of a blob than a bulls eye. But it was right tasty scrambled!

How do you 'tame' your keets?

I think it's just how they are---they're not chickens, they seem a lot closer to being wild so I think some of that crazy as babies is part of a flight instinct maybe. But they are great fun---ours are collectively named Gus. Can't imagine our place without Gus now....two or three times a day...

How do you 'tame' your keets?

We started with 7 last year. They were about a week old when we got them and despite being exposed to people they remained really flighty while they were in the coop (we kept the in it for 8 weeks) Interestingly once they started to free range they got better. Now (they were a year old in May)...

What do you think, is this a fertile egg?

This egg is from one of my guineas. The balstodisc is pretty clear in the pictures. Do y'all think it is---or was---it got scrambled for supper fertile?

It's been one week and she's still alive......

I know guineas take longer but my point is given the reputation guinea hens have of not being great mothers I would start watching early to try and round up her keets before she looses too many. And like I said, my broody hens often are a few days ahead of the 21 days chickens are suppose to...

How To Tell If Guinea Eggs Are Fertile

I have five guineas. In the last couple of weeks two have stopped coming to the roost and are not around. I think they are off on nests. Yesterday I followed a third and found her nest with 20 eggs. Today it has 21 so she is still adding to the clutch. Problem is I think all five of mine are...

It's been one week and she's still alive......

I'm kinda in the same position. Two of mine are not around and are not roosting with the rest and I think they are on nests (or eaten by some critter while they sat on the nest) I've found the nest of a third with 20 eggs yesterday and 21 today so she is still adding to it. My issue is that I...

    Suddenly almost no eggs

I have 21 hens. 15 of them are 2 years old, 6 are their chicks from last year so a year old. We have always had a rooster but about a month ago he died (natural stuff, he had had a lame leg from the time he was small and was declining all winter). We bought a new one and quarantined him for a...

    Smoky Mtn East TN

Hope this is okay to do here....our rooster passed away yesterday. I wonder if anyone has an extra young guy that needs a home. Not too fussy about breed, just that he not be agressive. I'm fond of mutts. I live in rural Blount County, Seymour/Walland. Thanks Bill

Four young Roosters near Knoxville TN need new homes

Hatched our first chicks this summer, 13 of 'em. We always hear that law of averages says if you hatch half will be hens and half roosters. Well they were, 6 hens, 7 roosters. We are keeping one and two of the boys have gone to new homes already but we still have 4 that need to move on. Their...

chicken mystery- can a pheasant AND a chicken mate & have viable eggs?

I dunno a lot about this but I think in some sex links barred ???rocks?? are used. Second generation sex links are not going to breed true, they are going to be, basically mutts. So that may be where you got a black chick with a white dot that is going to grow in barred feathers. Of course I...

chicken mystery- can a pheasant AND a chicken mate & have viable eggs?

Photo is not real clear but looks like the chick has a white spot on it's head? Barred chickens (Bared Rocks, Cuckoo Marans, Dominiques and so on) start off as black chicks with white dots. This spring my first broody hatched a Cuckoo Maran/EE cross. S/he was also black with the white spot, Now...

    Seting up a broody nest

I've had one hen go broody earlier this year. She hatched 5 chicks the first weekend in May. Now I have another who has been on flat and growling on fake eggs for two days. If she continues to be serious, I plan to give her some real eggs Friday. First hen had 5 unhatched eggs, not sure why, I...

How can I Make My hen go Broody?

I dunno.....we've had incubators for what, 100 years or so and hens for tens of thousands. Seems the hens did pretty well before the incubators?

    Anyone used Meyer's Hatchery?

Thanks. I thik sh eis pretty too. Her name is Eliza. She's a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte from Meyer. Great Momma hen, she takes great care of her chicks but has never been fussy with me at all. The Daddy of all the chicks is an Americana (this year they are calling 'em Easter Eggers) also from...
