We kept our first set of chicks in the garage. The second time we kept them in the garage, in a tote. Once they were too big for the tote we moved them outside, under a covered patio, in a raised brooder we built. We decided to move them out due to amount of dust they create that gets on...
I use pine shavings in my coop, and I've been sprinkling DE on/in the shavings for 3 years with no issues with my chickens and I've never had a mite issue.
I don't have a pic, but, I used a 55 gallon, food grade barrel. I drilled q hole near the bottom and installed a bulk head, attached a valve and ran pvc into my run and attached water nipples. Works great.
Here's a pic of a coop i built not too long ago. It's 6x8 with a 20x8 run. I put linoleum in the coop which makes it easier to clean. When it's time to clean out the coop, all I have to do is rake everything out into a wheelbarrow.
Curious why nesting boxes should not be in the run? I have 2 nesting boxes built on the end of my coop, but I have gone from 5 to 11 chickens and I don't really have room inside my coop for more nesting, so I was thinking of putting some in the run. It is covered, if that matters.
I keep a pair of shoes outside for working that I leave outside so I don't track anyranyt in. My wife has disposable booties to put on her shoes if she's just stepping outside and she also keeps a pair of work shoes for outside. We pet, pickup our chickens all the time. We just wash our hands...
Well, summer looks to finally be over. Here's a picture from last week after I mounted my weather station. KARBENTO34 on a wunderground.com if interested.
I have 2 windows on the front, 2 leuvered vents on one side and a window above the nesting box, open eaves plus the coop is next to a shade tree. But no amount of venting will keep this Arkansas humidity away.
There's a couple more roosts that are a bit higher that go across the inside of the coop. The eaves are open, but I was thinking about adding a gable vent or even a whirly bird. I had read not to close them up in the coop if outside temps were over 70°. I live in central Arkansas. The weather...
It was too hot to keep them inside the coop this afternoon, and as it got dark they all were trying to roost on the run. I thought about trying to catch them and put them back in the coop, but I figured they had enough stress for one day. So, I laid a board across the run and they all hopped...
We'll see shortly, as it's getting late. They did go outside on their own. Well, all but one, I put one in the run to help entice the others out. And we got them some crickets to entice them as well.
