    Candling Outside During the Day

I have a 2 part question. This is only my 2nd time hatching under a broody hen, I usually would just get day old chicks and use a brooder box. The first time I just let my hen only have 5 eggs, I never candled, and I moved her to a separate pen. I ended up breaking 4 broody hens last year by...

    Frostbite on comb and waddles

I live in Northern Indiana, near Lake Michigan. Wind chills have been in the -40’s and -20’s. The coop has been dry and is vented. What’s been really killer is it warms up a bit, gets rainy, then the temp plummets again. I feel bad because there’s no way for me to put water inside the coop as...

    Frostbite on comb and waddles

I went on vacation for 5 days and came back to my rooster having horrible frostbite on his comb and waddles! The girls look fine, but he looks horrible! I have GreenGoo and BlueKote. Would one of those be a good idea to put on him to relieve pain and help healing?

    Are my egg/embryos still alive?

Thought I'd give an update. The eggs never hatched. I even let her sit on them for an extra 5 days, just in case. Got rid of them and made her get up and move about. Gonna try to keep her off a nest if I can because it seems her chest is a bit swollen and kinda squishy. Hoping it's just because...

    Are my egg/embryos still alive?

I have a young broody who started sitting on eggs several weeks ago. For the first 2 weeks she was sitting on fake eggs because I didn't think she was serious, but then decided to give her 4 eggs to hatch when I realized she meant business. Over the past week and a half, I kept finding hee in a...

Incubator off all night! Eggs cold! Are they ok?? Yes!! My story to help others

I have a hen that's sitting on 4 eggs, but she keeps hopping nests! I think one of the other girls gets in her box when she goes to stretch her legs and she just decides to sit on different eggs. I don't know how long she was off this time, but the outside temp was about 33 degrees and the eggs...

    Racoon Attack!

How long should I keep them inside? Not sure how long they'd be susceptible to the flies.

    Racoon Attack!

I rinsed the wounds with saline, sprayed them with blue kote, then slathered it with green goo to help keep it moist. I have a rabbit cage I can use to bring them in the house in the morning. They might like hunkering down for a few days.

    Racoon Attack!

What kind of antibiotic? I saw penicillin at the feed store. What would be the ratio to give them?

    Racoon Attack!

My poor girls can't catch a break! A racoon managed to get in our coop last night and killed all but 2 of our girls. We managed to kill it and I believe I fixed the issue that allowed the coon in. My problem is, the 2 surviving girls have wounds on their heads. One almost looks like I think...

Fertile(?) Eggs left in nest box

Hi all:frow I went on vacation for a few days with my mom and sister, leaving my husband home to care for the girls. Naturally, he didn't collect the eggs for 3 days and one of the Easter Eggers thought she wanted to be broody (which, of course, she never really wants to after a bit :p). I...

    Molting hen pecked to death??

We lost a total of 5 girls. Finally found the culprit tho! A hawk has been flying into the coop and getting them as they go to lay. Was walking up to the coop and pen and saw this huge hawk waltz out of the little pop door. Definitely will cover the run! :ep We've hung up cds and my husband shot...

    Molting hen pecked to death??

I did purchase some online, but may take 3-8 days to come in. Hoping the scent spray will work in the meantime, I know that's not a permanent solution.

    Molting hen pecked to death??

Didn't realize no one carried the hardware cloth I need to finish their pen.:( So I got some coyote urine spray that I've heard is supposed to ward off smaller predators like weasels, minks, and opposums, which we have in abundance here. Thought they were only a problem at night, but I guess...

    Molting hen pecked to death??

Came home to another dead one tonight. Same story, back ripped open, but this time I found her up by the house. Thinking now it's a predator. Just not sure what kind would kill like that? I'm off the weekend and going to try to finish their secure pen I've been slacking on. @Eggcessive My...

    Molting hen pecked to death??

They have about an acre they roam freely everyday. And they have a decent amount of space in the coop at night, tho they seem to enjoy piling on top of each other as much as they can on roosts. I'll have to get everyone a good look over. It's difficult on the days I work as I'm a nurse and work...

    Molting hen pecked to death??

So I have (had) 12 hens who are 9 months old and about half of them are starting to molt. Tonight I found one of them dead on the coop floor. She was "face down" and her back area was flayed open and missing quite a bit of flesh and other bits (I mean bare bones were showing). I find it odd that...

    Frozen Eggs for Eggnog?

I found this info on http://www.eatbydate.com/dairy/milk/how-long-does-egg-nog-last-shelf-life-expiration-date/ "Freezing is not recommended for eggnog, the freezing process destabilizes the structure and once thawed the texture and consistency of the product is altered (formation of small...

    Frozen Eggs for Eggnog?

Didn't think about making it ahead of time! Might have to try it! Maybe I can also try a small batch using frozen eggs as an experiment to see which way comes out better.:hu

    Frozen Eggs for Eggnog?

So I'm about to prepare a bounty of eggs to be frozen in anticipation of the long winter months. But I was wondering if anyone has tried to use frozen eggs to make eggnog? I plan to add sugar or salt to batches of egg and the recipe I plan to use will heat the eggnog mixture to 160 degrees in...
