I did put her in the coop after dark so the others couldn’t see her wounds to peck at them and she’d be more comfortable on her own roost. She roosted right next to him of all places.

    Something violent went down...

When I cleaned up the most torn up hen, I did notice she had been injured at the back of the head behind her comb, as well as the comb damage. So, I guess he WAS responsible for that one! No one has injuries to their back, really, but he doesn’t have much of any spurs yet. I suppose he should be...

Thanks everyone for getting in on this conversation. I think I have a plan now.

And no, I don’t absolutely need to keep the cockerel. He was hatched by one of my Buffs, and I was allowing him a trial period to see if he would work out, so that I could have fertile eggs. A few of my older girls don’t lay that well anymore, and are destined for a soup pot. I thought replacing...

    Something violent went down...

There’s only 1 cockerel, I’m positive. All the rest lay eggs. I have 6 grown hens, two pullets, and a roo. As far as space is concerned, I know that it matters and could have some bearing on the situation, but I can’t even begin to deal with that today, which is why I’m avoiding answering that...

    Something violent went down...

I’m having trouble clearing my confusion, and maybe I’m not communicating the issue correctly. After seeing the hens fight, I’m not sure the cockerel is the issue anymore. My Buffs don’t fight with each other. You would think if it were the younger ones that were causing the issue, that the...

    Something violent went down...

I mean she flared her hackles, jumped at her with her feet out and pecked her in the face, and when the other went to run away, she followed behind and kept trying to get at her. This is not behavior I’ve seen in my girls before. I’ve seen the pecking order stuff, but not this. The biggest...

    Something violent went down...

This morning, I went out to catch the roo, so I could put him in a wire dog cage. One of my hens attacked another hen, rooster style, while I was in there. I caught her and put her in jail instead. Maybe it was her drawing blood? I don’t know. I’m confused now.

Ok. I had noticed some peck marks on combs for about a week and a half, but nothing this dramatic.

Should I intervene? Or should I let him do his dominance battles with the older girls?

    Something violent went down...

Two of my 2 yr. old hens got roughed up today. Two have mangled tail feathers and one has a bloody pecked comb, and the down around her vent looked kind of matted like she was held to the ground which is wet from rain. The more roughed up one also acted spooked when I brought evening food. My...

    Well crap....I need to vent

Dang! I’m sorry to hear about your missing quail. If it makes you feel better, I had a similar thing happen with some barred rock chicks at one point. It was my fault for leaving them in a temporary run overnight that wasn’t secure enough. We live, we learn, and get better, but not without...

Hens haven't been laying for months

That’s normal for my chickens. They are all soft, slow molters. They’ve gone off-lay for as long as 4 mo., much to my dismay. They also molt late in the season, so shortened daylight hours, and overcast conditions contribute to their extended break. I haven’t found that changes to my girls’ diet...

Do you have chicken nightmares too.

Understandable. I’m an Okie and a lot of us are sort of desensitized about tornadoes, because it’s just a fact of life here. No disrespect to you intended. I hate to hear that you have such freaky nightmares about them.

Do you have chicken nightmares too.

Had you watched Twister before that dream? Lol! I know it wouldn’t be funny in reality, but that flying cow scene slays me every time.

How do YOU winterize your coop?

Poly foam board applied to two windward walls on the OUTside of the coop (my chickens love to eat styrofoam a little too much). Black garden weed cloth applied on top of insulation board and to the roof. It’s breathable and it absorbs some heat from the sun. Beyond that, lots of extra bedding...

Do you have chicken nightmares too.

I’ve had dreams about chickens, and seen them pop up in dreams that have nothing to with chickens. Never nightmares, though.

    test me!

You will know more by the time the reunion comes. You have time. You have to remember that chicken expertise comes from years of hands on experience as well as study. I’m only in my 3rd year with chickens and there’s still so much I haven’t learned yet. Plus, chickens can sometimes make us feel...
