The particular environment in which the incubator is located can play a part as well. You'll need to continue experimenting until you find what works best for you.
Probably a disorder unique to that particular bird... It would be difficult to know the cause without a necropsy and even then the cause may not be accurately determined...

So by line breeding, do you mean selective inbreeding? I also had the same question as Tony and am still not sure I understand. Are you saying you have some birds that are from wild caught stock that have never been bred with anything that is not from wild caught? It would be good if...

Could you post pictures of the 30-40 buttons you keep together as I think this would be of tremendous interest. If they are in good condition it would say a great deal about your skill in keeping buttons. It might also dispel the "major misconception" you speak of. Also, I think it...
What a horrible and unspeakable act... I wonder what this guy's mother knows about her son's mental state. When ABC News called her, she reportedly told them, "You have the right person." Seems that we'll know a lot more when the mother and his friends are interviewed by the media...
I think you're doing great. What I meant to say before is that my quail do best when provided with fresh, cool water that is changed at least twice a day. This is just tap water and I don't do anything to make it cooler than it already is. The temp of the water obviously warms up as a...
Someone I talked with who visited a Chinese zoo a few years ago said the goldens and amhersts he saw there were crosses. He even showed me some pictures and they were far from pure! I don't think he went to Chengdu Zoo. You mentioned offering F1 crosses of San Diego Zoo and "wild caught" stock...
Nice picture and a great start! As you go along, you'll probably not want to have your water right under the light bulb as the chicks will do best drinking cool water. Of course if the water doesn't get too warm then you're alright... Again, great job!
Sorry to hear about your loss. I do think the mother will sense one is missing for a while but it will pass with time. Accidents happen and you shouldn't take it too hard.
It's so fun to see quail hatch and rear their young... Love your pictures... I think it would be cool to have a Wallaby! What are your winters like in Provence?
There's not much in the way of books on raising just quail. But keep an eye on Amazon.com and Ebay. There is a book I got from Amazon a while back that's pretty good called Quail, Their Breeding and Management by G.E.S. Robbins. I think they have new and used copies listed there now but they're...
Chickman, I believe you said the deaths were occurring only during the night. This could indicate they are not receiving enough heat or too maybe too much and you might not realize it. It's a funny thing how conditions can change during longer periods where they are not being observed...
