Unless you're a veterinarian, I dont think surgery is going to be a good option.. I have not see any videos of surgery on quail. Sorry to hear you have a bird with such a difficult problem
Jackwelder your experience with the chukar taking up with the chickens is interesting. I have also had some chukars that were more resistant to diseases that affect chickens and poultry. And it depends on what the chickens are carrying, but usually best not to run them together as I think Toni said.
I also think you'll be okay. I find natural incubation under either parent or a substitute for at least the first couple weeks before going into incubator gives me the best hatching results with wild type waterfowl eggs...
Careful when cleaning not to cause additional injury... Suggest watching it closely when put back with the others for obvious reasons... It should be fine... Good luck!
I don't know about veggie scraps, but I feed finely chopped greens beginning first few days... I'm a believer in adding natural component to diet of quail and pheasant chicks, even though most commercial feeds (of the right type) should satisfy their nutritiona requirements...
Years ago I used bantams to hatch pheasant eggs and it worked out well. It is a lot more work than incubators because you have to maintain the broody hens with a clean environment, fresh feed and water daily, etc. Otherwise you could end up with disease problems in the young pheasants... Hatch...
