    Breeds and Gentleness in Roosters?

My black cochin rooster has been awesome as has his offspring. I culled the white rocks, silver polish, spangled hamburg, whatever the mystery rooster was, and a few mixed ones from hatching. We will see if this years mystery chicks will have the same fate.

    “Starlight green egger” from TSC?

I just bought this same breed from Rural King today. My two look like the chick on the left. The one on the right with wing feathers looks like my Welsummers i bought a couple of weeks ago.

Great advice about the peroxide and tea tree oil, Anne! I'm debating signing up with an EO distributor to get "wholesale" pricing.

    Toddlers are Quackers

(Hey Chaos and MotorcycleChick, found yinz over here.) My mother and I played a little trick on my two boys (6 &3) this morning. I had YaYa put 4 eggs in the nesting boxes so my boys could find their breakfast, since I got two tiny (first) eggs yesterday. Soon I won't have to do that...

Finally got our first eggs today. One was on the roost, the other one a few hours later right outside the coop. I told my oldest that his job today was to follow the chickens to see if they are laying anywhere, he found both of the eggs.

Have you considered or have room for a bachelor pad coop? Keep the roosters separate from your young hens. It gives your hens a chance to mature and it will save the veggies. I had a similar problem two weeks ago (no blood though), my older son's pet hen was being picked on too much by the 3...

    Mean Rooster

I have too have read that picking them up and carrying them around is supposed to work. I also read to give him treats since that's what he does for his ladies. Having said that, I just put my three in the soup pot this week. They were picking on the younger hens and I just wasn't going to deal...

@Chaos18 In regards to brush removal... Let me know how fast the goats clear out where you put them. I've been kicking that idea around for a few years. The barn needs a new roof before that happens, too many larger predators to just give them a shed in the field. Thanks

@MotorcycleChick We always took the rotten eggs and smashed them to see what stage went wrong. I don't plan on letting mine hatch. However, if I don't finish my run soon they will start laying in the tall grass and I won't be given the choice.

@fisherlady@Werforpsu@Auroradream26 I will keep Yinz posted. I actually sent my sister to pick them up instead of having them shipped, she said it was super clean. Day2: All 25 are active and eating well. I'm hoping it won't be too hot for them this summer. I am interested in finding someone who...

Well I have two boys 6 and 3, I'm sure in some circles that would count. I just started my flock at my mother's house this spring for something for her to do in her retirement years, aside from watching my boys. I have 3 black australorps ready to lay any day, and 10 other hens (of various...

Thank you! I'm glad I didn't interrupt. I never bothered with chat rooms or social media but I figured i'll get a better response here to any questions than if I googled it.

Thanks for the link and the warm welcome. I'm thinking I'll try fermenting feed after I finish the chicken run; one thing at a time.
