    Rhode Island

Howdy fellow Rhodyites! I am not chicken to say i love ducks! I ha (d) 4, Rouens and Blue Sweedes. Unfortunately a red tailed hawk grabbed one of my girls, so now down to 3. My female has gone broody and is sitting on them currently, being a great mom. My question is, they are due to hatch in...

I find that sectioning off part of your run or building a temporary run next to the full grown chickens works for me. I place the younger chickens in the protected area with food and water so all birds can see each other but the large birds can not hurt the smaller ones. After a couple weeks I...

    RHODE ISLANDERS UNITE!

Hey! New to BYC, wanted to say hey to my fellow Rhode Islanders. No chickens for me right now, but i have a big batch of button quail eggs in the incubator. Welcome AmberBQuail! BYC is wonderful! I wish you luck with your incubating eggs! I don't know much about quails but it sounds like an...

We used a large dog crate for a brooder and covered the sides with cardboard so the fluffy butts didn't escape. It gets very dusty in the area you put them. We managed that by hanging old sheets from the ceiling

Sounds like she's going through a late partial molt, especially if there's pin feathers present. Have you checked for mites or lice? Some are microscopic but if you study the feather shafts you'll be able to see them moving. Do you have an over eager rooster? If you have a roo and he's picked...

I've seen this in some of my girl's eggs from time to time. From what Ive been told, it's excess calcium. They say not to worry unless you chook appears or acts sick, then they say to check for worms in their poo. I kinda like the specks! Like a little artist

I haven't had frozen water yet but I did cover the run with plastic and lattice. Poor girls looked miserable with all this cold, damp wind

MollySunshine: thanks for the video tip! I'll look it up first thing in the morning. Just like you, I'm partial to the pine shavings over hay or straw. Some research indicates that mites and tiny crawls critters like to hide in the hollow shaft of straw and hay. I will never use it in my coop...

I would love to have a Roo! Unfortunately our town ordinance doesn't allow them. I'm in love with out little group of girls. If I had known they were this addicting, I would have made a bigger coop! As far as winterizing, our run has a solid roof so I was thinking of attaching clear shower...

Hello fellow RI'ers!  I thought it would be a good idea to join this thread and see what everyone in my area is up to.   Hello! I'm from Bristol. We started this spring with chicks and now have a flock of 6 young ladies that love mischief and all are finally laying. We have 2 Plymouth Rocks and...

    Dirt in Run?

We used construction sand in our covered run also. I modified a metal rake with 1/4" hardware cloth and use that to rake/sift the poop out like a giant litter scooper. Works great in areas that are hard to get like under the coop! The sand drains well, the girls dust bathe wherever they want...
