wet, wet out here in Denver.... It's much needed and I'm hoping to stay out of the major drought we had a few years back. I remind myself of that each time I complain about the (darn) precipitation! The chicks are 4 weeks old now. We are brooding indoors and I am ready for them to be...

    Suggestions on Store Bought Coops

We went to the feed store and talked with them. We were very blunt about our price range ($300) and none of the coops they were selling were less than 350 and they only housed half of the chickens we wanted. Once we got all that out of the way (and they knew we weren't budging on the price) they...

Making your winter feed now: silage

This is very interesting. I can imagine that the chickens would enjoy greens in the winter this way.

    Horizontal nipple waterer

This is a great thread. I love the idea of the addition of the bird bath heater. I'm looking to use my waterer over our Denver winter and don't want to deal with frozen water!

My proposed home-made chicken feed mix- does it sound right?

Some great thoughts here. Eventually, I'm looking into making my own. I am curious how to find out the protien content of a feed. Is there a website? I use myfitnesspal for human recipes, is that adequate?

    Urban Homesteaders

That's annoying. We lost a watermelon last year (we had 2) and it's really discouraging. I guess it is just a part of the urban part of urban homesteading. We deal with people who "need" it more than we do. It's upsetting to me, but honestly i don't know what we can actually do. If you can catch...

    Urban Homesteaders

I've been "urban homesteading" for the past 7 years or so with varying levels of commitment. I've just finished my masters program and am looking forward to recommitting myself to this. For me it means: doing something about food (even if it's just herbs on a windowsill, though we grow...

Help figure out my ventilation issue! (please!)

I bought a lovely, large chicken coop for my baby chicks second hand from the feed store. I KNOW that I need more ventilation and plan to do it. I thought I would have you AMAZING people help me to identify what to do and where to do it. I’ve attached the pictures of my coop. Everything we do...

    Light in the coop?

I'm going to be in this spot too. We kept a night light on for the girls for the first few nights because they acted crazy when the lights went out and then we started thinking about it- that's not going to happen when they are in the coop, I need to turn it off! City chickens are coddled.... Or...

    pasty butt

We call it poopy butt and it showed up yesterday in one of our 3 week old chicks. We are doing everything we can (I'm coming home from work on my lunch, and then checking her out when we are home) and removing the poop, gently with warm water but her vent remains herniated. She is trembling...

You guys will get this. The cold came in and cooled the house down to the point that the brooder was 78! I caught it, heated it up again and took care of it but these spring time changes in temperatures can be crazy. I didn't really think of the weather as something to remember when the chicks...
