I was also looking at a 'pet' heating pad that was supposed to be used with pets and said it could be left on 24/7. Thought that may help lower the risk as well.
I will be making one out of a heating pad or some sort. Have yet to buy one. Trying to figure out the best size as I don't wanna use any extra $ or electrical energy if I don't have to. Don't want some left out in the cold, lol.
Hi AllenK RGV! Could you provide me with more info on your heating pad that you use? I have only found ones around 50-60watts. Trying to buy something for a brooder box for my chicks.
Has anyone used one of these in a brooder box - such as a mama heating cave/plates? Curious to know if they get hot enough.
I like that it looks more durable than a traditional heating pad. I especially want something lower wattage if I am to use it in the main coop/fence area as it would have...
That does make sense! I just assumed they may eat more as they need to keep warm. My meaties (that did lay eggs after a year old) ate all the time so they were always on rations so I never noticed with them. So I am still learning with layers (not meaties turned into layers, lol).
It is my understanding their egg rate will drop if their food drops. Mine love to run around and eat everything in the yard, plus scraps. I would not consider just the yard enough nutrition though. Sure they may survive but they will be less productive and would probably die sooner too. I did...
We can't have certain animals due to allergies so the chickens seemed like a dual purpose -food and pet, but we started with rescue chickens when all we went for was chicken poop and somehow my spouse ended up rescuing a few that the chicken company left behind. So, it wasn't planned but my...
I am sorry this post may be long and rambly but I wanted to share our good/bad experiences with you as I was never able to find much info when I first rescued our chickens.
We have "rescued" birds as well! They are definitely NOT the same as real chickens. BUT We love ours :)
Our first...
We like to keep special rain boots or crocs to help keep the poo to a minimum in our house, etc. Hands will get dirty but you can also teach them, over time. But we also have a fenced area just for the chickens that is not a children's play area. I would think mixing the 2 could cause issues...
My sussex is almost 4 months old and for some reason she had a big crop. She looked like she was having a seizure and before I noticed that, she just seemed off. Then as I carried her I noticed she was "drooling" She didn't stink but did have a bloated crop so I proceeded to try acv and water...
