    Help! Dog Attack.

yes, thanks Trish - hope so. I guess its early days to be too excited but it certainly looks like she'll be fine. I'm intrigued to see how it heals and if the skin and feathers grow back. Thanks again to all of you - I'll definitely be back!

    Help! Dog Attack.

hi everyone just want to say thanks so much for all the help and advice. Our unlucky hen has now been renamed Lucky - she is happily running around with no tail and a very black bum from the stockholm tar, but is quite happy back with the flock. Still giving her antibiotics for a few more...

    Help! Dog Attack.

just realised indigo that you were talking about two different hens - sorry, my message must have sounded very jumbled! If you have a hen who refuses to come out of her nesting box, she is already broody so you don't need to do anything other than seperate her and give her some fertilised eggs...

    Help! Dog Attack.

I know and its our family dog that is the culprit - I don't know what it is about the hens that gets to him, but if he gets near them he goes for them. I think its the noise they make - he tries to get them to stop, but doesn't try to kill them, hence the horrible injuries. Anyway, have got...

    Help! Dog Attack.

Hi Miss Lydia and thanks very much for that - I will certainly keep a close eye on her, so far she is fine and the others seem to be leaving her alone. Good idea to soak her a couple of times, will do that and keep her as clean as possible, and will try to find blue kote - not sure we can get...

    Help! Dog Attack.

Hi, I'm a bit new to this so hope this post makes it. One of my chickens got out of the run and was savagely attacked by one of our dogs a few days ago. She's in a mess, but remarkably seems quite well, eating, drinking, pecking and clucking. She has basically had her whole tail ripped...

    One chick has disappeared!

Ok thanks - I might do that tomorrow. They are cooped up for the night now and safe, so I might try moving them tomorrow and see what happens. thanks to all!

    One chick has disappeared!

I guess anything's possible, but I haven't seen any signs of anything getting in to the coop - we have had a problem with rats before, but there's no sign of anything this time. There are plenty of mink around but again, we haven't had a problem with them so far. Its a mystery - hopefully...

    One chick has disappeared!

Thanks everyone for the replies - I have looked everywhere for the chick and there's no sign of her. Have completely cleaned out the broody coop and put new bedding in etc. Then today another one disappeared! I figure that they are hopping out through the wire and maybe one of the other hens...

    One chick has disappeared!

Our bantam has just hatched a clutch of eggs - six in all. One of them seemed a little sick this morning, didn't seem to be able to balance so well and its head was tucked down. I left it with the hen and the other chicks to see how it would get on (thinking the hen is the best judge in these...

Can one chicken lay 2 eggs in one day, as it's first eggs ever?

We are convinced one of our brown hens just laid two eggs, one after the other. She was sitting in the nesting box - there were no eggs in there when she went in, and when she came out there were two - both warm, recently laid. One was quite wrinkly and the other perfect! Strange or not?

Cockerel attacked two weeks ago, recovered and died today

I think that too, but it seemed so sudden - and no obvious wounds that could have got infected. I'd rather it was that though than something else which might affect the rest of the hens. Sorry to hear you lost a hen today too - they become part of the family quite quickly don't they.

Cockerel attacked two weeks ago, recovered and died today

I have (had!) a lovely blue leghorn, only young - about 8 months old. Two weeks ago he got out of the run and two of our dogs attacked him. I thought he was dead, but turned out he was fine - apart from a few puncture wounds on him. He recovered well, started crowing again after a few days...

    Purple comb - Help!

Hi I'm new to BYC - started keeping chickens this year. Have a lovely blue leghorn who has successfully provided us with four chicks a few weeks ago. Last week he was attacked by two of our dogs - amazingly, he survived and was back crowing again after a few days. This morning though he is...
