    Little Margaret is now...Margarito

I saw a video on that yesterday. It's an option if all else fails, at lest until we move and end up in a place that doesn't allow roosters.

    Little Margaret is now...Margarito

Hi Sky, I recognize the benefits and would love to keep him especially since we live in the desert with lots of predators, but neighbors aren't far away and the noise is a serious concern. It seems like there's a glut of roosters at the local sanctuaries, so hopefully a spot becomes available.

    Little Margaret is now...Margarito

I discovered yesterday that Little Margaret the bantam frizzle (must have the gene only because there ain't much frizzling going on) is actually Margarito el Gallo, after a 4 am wakeup call and lots of expressions of dominance with the other hens. I've made a couple of calls to local 4H clubs...

Review by '' on item 'Marans'

I have 2 Cuckoo Marans since hatching and they still act completely feral despite all attempts to socialize. They're still too young to lay yet so I might have something positive to say about them in a few months, but temperamentally they prefer keeping to themselves and and act like I plan on...

Review by '' on item 'Orpington'

Sadly I just lost my Buff Orpington, Cora, but she was hands down the most wonderful pet. She wasn't quite a lap chicken, but she ran to greet me at the gate when I got home each day and would also run to me when treats were to be had. She also liked to be picked up and carried around the...

    Solar Fan Recommendations

Thanks, Cavemanrich. It's a flock of 6 chickens, they get late afternoon shade and I put a shade sail up as well, but as you know it's just not enough.

    Solar Fan Recommendations

Greetings from AZ! I'm curious to hear any opinions/recommendations for solar fans for my coop. Yeah, I know that we're going into winter but I'm thinking about it right now, so if I don't ask I'll forget. Living in AZ, I think it would be stupid not to take advantage of solar power to keep...

    KEEPING CHICKENS COOL

Considering how much time and effort has gone into fixing the prefab coop, I'd say your marital aggravations surrounding coop construction will be worth it. I wish I had advice to give you. My huge fear was the time it would take for hubby to finish, since he didn't want my help. Pick a...

    Suggestions on herding chickens?

So in a classic "I thought you were doing it" moment between my husband and myself, we forgot to close the coop and the chickens spent the night with the coop door wide open. They're all fine, but since they're not the most social girls, it is nearly impossible for me to get them back in during...

    KEEPING CHICKENS COOL

yes, it is indeed a bit flimsy. Originally we were going to build a coop but my husband kept coming up with these chicken palace designs that were way too big and cumbersome to build. Not to mention it takes him 6 times as long as the average person to build, in fact he was given the task prior...

    KEEPING CHICKENS COOL

Hi Bruce. It's the same manufacturer but slightly different. It was about $315 out the door.I replaced the door with a solid sheet of plywood to keep a particularly persistent dog out. I also reinforced the hardware cloth on all the panels

    KEEPING CHICKENS COOL

I, too, live in AZ and have 3 month old chicks. I've found that extra moisture near the coop in the form or a mister or soaked ground invites a ton of flies. I do have a pre-fab coop from Costco, but to increase the shade area I also bought a Shade Sail from Costco that I was able to secure to...
