    Law Florence AL

I'm from Florence, AL, but we live in the county. However, I looked into the laws about keeping chickens in the city limits and it's a NO. You say you live kind of on the cusp of city and county? Do you have city or county garbage collection? If it's picked up by county, you can keep...

    ALABAMA!!

So we've waited until nearly too late this year to get the chicken breeds we wanted locally and if I order them from Cackle or MyPetChicken it's going to be $50 for 3-4 pullets after shipping. So is there anyone located near Florence, AL or Lauderdale County that has chicks hatching soon? I'm...

    ALABAMA!!

So sorry for your loss! We have a lot of dogs in our area (not strays! but we live out in the county and there is no leash law) so we are working hard to make sure we make our coop and run as dog and predator proof as possible. Good luck!

I would prefer colored and brown eggs,as to white, but we aren't too concerned about it. Egg production isn't a huge concern, since it will just be 3-4 hens. I would prefer them to not have the feathered legs. Basically, other than that, we aren't picky. We really just need sweet calm birds that...

Thanks so much for this!! I was actually about to try to make one, but there is just so much information to put on there, it was intimidating!

My husband and I are currently fixing up an old shed out back for the purpose of keeping laying hens. My mother-in-law has kept chickens nearly her entire life, so she'll be helping us out ALOT. I also have a 9 year old daughter who will be helping me take care of these "pets", so if anyone...

    Hello from Vernont

I'm new to chickens, as well, but I've been reading Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow. She suggests 1 sq foot of window for every 10 sq feet of flooring in the coop. And to use 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth as "screening" because predators like raccoons can tear through regular...
