    Rouen Duck thread

Rouens do not fly. However, you may think you have a Rouen and you have a mallard. That's what happened to me. If you get them from a wholesaler, they're generally mixed and they'll just put "Rouen" on the box and it's a guess. I only found out because one of my girls was smaller than the others...

    Broken leg

I was watching her today and she is limping but using the foot to scratch her head. She may have sprained it, but I don't think it's broken. Thank you so much everyone for the great ideas and support!!!! I really love this site!

    Broken leg

I know. The pain upsets me. How would i ever give pain meds to a duck?? Maybe in a piece of bread? I don't give them bread but I guess I can. I usually just give meal worms as a snack.

    Broken leg

I'm going to try to do that today. I'll definitely keep you informed. I'm also afraid of freaking her out, especially since she's injured.

    Broken leg

This is really weird. We had a frost and the next day one of my female ducks was sitting for a very long time in a frozen muddy area. I noticed this was odd because the other ones were swimming in the pool and she normally is too. Later when she got up, she was hopping on one leg. Now she's...

Eating duck eggs because of chicken egg allergies

I'm allergic to chicken eggs and can eat my home-raised duck and quail eggs. I also raised chickens on the same feed and still couldn't eat the eggs. (I feed all my animals corn-only chicken feed). My first naturopathic doc told me there was casein in chicken eggs, which is dairy. This didn't...

    Quail egg allergy?

I'm allergic to everything, including chicken eggs. I can eat both quail and duck eggs without a problem. I do raise them myself but I feed them both chicken crumbles. I had chickens and fed them the crumbles but still couldn't eat the eggs for some reason.

    Rouen Duck thread

Yeah i was really disappointed that she flew away because now they have to be in a covered coop all the time. Plus we have chicken hawks here and they're viscous! I purchase locally but haven't heard any issues with purchasing online. I would recommend one thing if you haven't raised chicks...

    Duck pool freezing in winter

Why did you buy plastic tanks over the steel/metal ones?? Thanks for your post by the way, it was very helpful!!!!!

    Rouen Duck thread

Good Luck!!!!! Ducks are wonderful. Just keep an eye on them. I thought I had 4 Rouens. Turned out i had 3. Only found out one was a mallard when she flew the coop. Luckily she only flew 100' in my direction and I was able to catch her and put chicken wire on the coop. Post pictures once you get...

    Duck pool freezing in winter

Oh thanks, that's interesting. I'll look that up. I just figured they loooovvvved their pool and didn't want them to be without it. hehe

    Duck pool freezing in winter

Help??!! I have a little pool ~3 feet around for my ducks and I'm concerned the water will freeze over the winter. I change the water everyday and this will be my first winter with my ducks. Any suggestions???? (We don't get snow, but we do get very cold weather)

    Rouen Duck thread

I have no idea how to clip a duck's wings. However, I just watched this video and it doesn't seem too hard. But how often will they regrow making you have to recheck and reclip? Yikes. Do you do this? Here's an adorable video on duck wing clipping I just found...

    Rouen Duck thread

That's very interesting because I was at my vegetable garden where she flew to. I spoke to someone at the feed store where I bought the chicks and she said because of the giant lakes around my house and the multitude of wild ducks, if my ducks see a flock flying overhead, mine will be very...

    Rouen Duck thread

Well, I'm not completely sure. One of my girls is a Mallard because she recently flew the coop, literally!! I let them out to roam the back yard and she flew about 100' away at about 30' altitude. I was lucky to herd her back into the covered area where she (now named Amelia Duckhart) and my...

    Rouen Duck thread

I just wanted a bigger area because their coop takes up a lot of room in the 5 x 15' enclosure (with chicken wire on top), the coop is about 3 x 5' and then there's the pool which is 3' round so they don't have a lot of space to run around (though i don't know how much space each duck needs). I...

    Rouen Duck thread

You're right. I did go back to the feed store where I bought them. The woman said it was probably a mallard, just like you all said here. I asked why it was in the Rouen bin when I purchased the four and she said they get a "lot" from the breeder and tell people it's a mix. I didn't remember...

    Rouen Duck thread

Ooops sorry. I just read my posted post and I see a word that was blocked. It wasn't a curse word but clearly a word that isn't okay here. I'll be sure not to use it again. My 87 year old mother hates that word too. Next time i'll say he "angered" her. So the one in the back is the one that...
