Thanks for the tips. Currently she runs around in a very sporadic fashion, hence my theory and the vision issues. Also she gets easily startled when she doesn't notice something until it's very close up, such as my feet or the dog. I'm sure this will help.
Is it ok for me to put a small scrunchy or something around the base of her crest so that she can see better? I feel like her vision is very impaired by the way her crest feathers grow.
Hi Sevanson,
I originally had two Rhode Island Reds and a silver laced Wyandotte, but lost one of the Reds to predation. I now currently have the remaining red, silver-laced Wyandotte, and two pullets; one is a golden-laced Polish, and the other is a Speckled Sussex. I'm not to particular...
Yea, my dog is a pit bull-labrador retriever mix. So I'm dealing with bird dog instincts too. I've been meaning to invest in the e-collar you mentioned. She has other behaviors I'd like to discourage. I might be able to stake her out and make chasing the chickens have unpleasant results without...
Thankfully I intervened in time to save the second one. She had a rip on her neck and wing. I cleaned her up, and super glued the larger wound that had too much separation due to the length of it. I don't mean to be a Debbie downer compared to the other stories; but I just want people to...
I thought I had my dog trained to co-exist with my chickens. Then one day after having been around them for months(with no incidents), she just randomly started mauling them when I was gone. I guess she decided that the chickens were chew toys when she got bored. No amount of spanking or other...
I see you and others let your chickens inside the house. Do they not poop all over the floor? I've never known chickens to have bowel control. In fact I don't really pick them up unless I just hold them in the crook of my arm with the back side clear of me and my clothing.
Is there such a thing as a quiet breed of rooster?
I ask because the main limitation on chickens in my city is that they can't be noisy. I wouldn't mind having a rooster to guard my hens and allow me to hatch out eggs occasionally, but a noisy Roo would probably get me in trouble. Is there a...
My first 3 birds were 2 Rhode Island Reds and a Silver Laced Wyandotte. The Wyandotte is my favorite by far. She is very fluffy and tolerates my picking her up for a little petting or to put her in the coop. I love her little vocalizations too, she'l let you know when she wants to be let out of...
Hah, yea I've only been here since 2010 so I have no desire to flee just yet. Plus the city has been good to me. I graduated this past December from U of M myself. BYC keeping seems pretty prevalent here in the city, especially in the Midtown area where all the hipsters live, haha.
Hey guys, I'm a long time reader and just created my forum account. I live in Memphis, TN near the University of Memphis (Go Tigers Go!). I have a small flock of four and even that is more egg production than I'd ever eat. Half my egg stock goes to friends and family. If you're a resident in the...
Hey everybody,
I've been reading off this sight for some time, especially for purposes of becoming a good chicken handler. I've had a flock for 8 months or so now. My girls are all productive and healthy layers. 2 grown hens from the original batch (lost one to predators unfortunately), and...
I have a bearded dragon who really loves Superworms, which are basically just over-sized meal worms. I decided to see if the hens liked them since chickens reputedly love meal worms. Turns out, they absolutely LOVE them. They fight over them like you wouldn't believe. So I try to throw out...
