Nipple vs. cup waterers and auto fill

I read as much as I could and did not see this covered. Some great info given! I service many chickens and want to run hardlined auto-fill nipples with pvc pipe connected to the household water. Been running open cups, but they are not the best at keeping illness at bay. I want to use nipples...

Comment by 'TheFoxyChicken' in article 'Winecooler Bator'

I enjoyed this and see no other comments. I wonder how successful this was. Specifically placing the PC fan in the center blowing upwards. The idea is to pull the heat up the center and down the sides. I am curious how this worked and the hatch rates. I have a bator like this and have...

Administering TYLAN Water Soluble Powder dosage to small flock

I must be missing the simplicity of this. I should have paid attention in school. Count out the teaspoons? the dosage is 2000 mg per gallon. There are 100g in container. So 2 g per gallon. 100/2=50 There should be 50 doses in the jar. How will my teaspoon help me here? Pour out all the...

Administering TYLAN Water Soluble Powder dosage to small flock

I cannot help but find this funny each time is comes up. Maybe its just where I'm from. But, I do not know a single farmer who carries a jewelry scale with them into the field. If they do, they might be a different kind of farmer ;) Why would anyone use "grams": a measure of weight, on the...

Just an update for those who are looking for a cure on this...There are no signs of healing. Administered all things offered. Canker still growing. I have been waiting to cut to see if the growing would stop. I did not want to perform surgery to remove the material in front of and behind the...

    Sinus infection photos

Good job WestKnoll Amy I read through this thread for a Canker problem in a bantam of mine. Similar hard canker plugging his sinus about the size of an acorn. All meds attempted and after reading this I am confident cutting it out is all that is left. Thanks for allowing us to live this...

BB Red with Swollen eye and throat. Getting bad quickly

(Details Not for the faint hearted) My little rooster is still making it. The canker in the mouth has stopped growing. I removed all of it in the mouth. But, I am guessing there is much more hard canker material left up in the sinus between the mouth and eye. I cannot see the start of it...

Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Is the splash gene random? I am assuming this always requires a splash in the past to carry it forward. But, how does it start? I ordered a dozen eggs and although the rest hatched standard, one was a splash rooster. Should I be pleasantly surprised at my fortunate treasure? Or should I be...

BB Red with Swollen eye and throat. Getting bad quickly

Thank you. Yes, Eggcessive seems to normally be able to place a finger on the problem. I am thinking the newest eye problem is from scratching itchy eyes. Not related to the 1st.

BB Red with Swollen eye and throat. Getting bad quickly

Thank you! This is exactly what I see in his mouth. I just learned the Choanal slit also goes to the eye cavity. That explains the swelling in the eye. I am leaving to get copper sulfate in a minute as per your suggestion. Thank you. A little surprised about the way this is normally...

Topic of the Week - Aggressive Roosters: What is the best way to handle them?

That sounds like good advice SpeckledHen. Perhaps my experience is based on a small backyard flock. I have been successful at curbing some habits. But, perhaps I have been also removing good protective habits along with it. I will give this consideration.

Topic of the Week - Aggressive Roosters: What is the best way to handle them?

We remove ours from the flock for a week or two. This sometimes shifts the dominance. Then I reintroduce. If the rooster is still aggressive, we try another method of housing. If in a pen, we free range. Or visa versa. If still a mean bird, I go full blown love farmer. After getting him...

    what killed my geese?

Some vets perform a cause of death test. There is a poultry name for it. Can't remember. They check blood and a few other things to help in these matters. I can think of no other cause. But, I have not seen it all just yet. Perhaps it could be lightning. I gather it is possible. So sorry...
