Bird losing "feathery" part of head feathers?

So yeah now that I have something easier to google, it seems this is pretty normal. Seems like she was afflicted with the disease of over reacting owners.

Bird losing "feathery" part of head feathers?

Definitely looks like molt now. Didn't occur to me because she isn't even a year old yet. Any reason she would molt so early in the middle of winter?

Bird losing "feathery" part of head feathers?

I was thinking maybe that we're still pretty new to raising the girls, only had one bird go through molt. I'm not too worried she seems to be eating drinking and shitting. My wife assumes all of our birds are going to die.

Bird losing "feathery" part of head feathers?

SO one of our birds has something weird going on with her head. It's winter in NH right now and pretty cold but everyone seems fine. Our one leghorn looks like her feather on her head are losing the "feathery part" just looks like spine remaining. It almost looks like new feathers growing in but...

Cockerel won't run when hen pecked.

Thanks for the advice. We only have the two chickens so I thought there aggressive behavior was normal. I'll have to set up an isolated area for the little dude, once he's recovered. The other two chicks seem to be doing much better with the situation.

Cockerel won't run when hen pecked.

The chicks have been in the coop with the bigger birds for about a week and a half. I set up a screened off area, with an opening too small for the bigger birds so the chicks can have respite whenever they want. It seems to work really well for 2 of the chicks but this one just doesn't know how...

Cockerel won't run when hen pecked.

So we have 2 birds 1 RIR and one barred rock both a little over a year old. We got 3 new chicks this year that are now about 8 weeks old. We introduced them to the new hens about a week ago. The adult hens were pretty aggressive and pecked the chicks pretty relentlessly so we set up an area in...

2 Chickens left. What to do?

Thanks to a local bobcat we went from 6 chickens down to 2. I am a little unsure how we want to proceed. We intended to free range so our run is a little undersized. Right now the run and coop are both about 4'x8' and about 8' tall. First thing i'm concerned about is will 2 chickens be enough...

    Missing chicken.

I'm essentially going to use this thread as an online journal at this point. Still no sign of the missing chicken, the remaining 5 have been free ranging fine and i have no sign of predators in the last 3 days. I've thought about getting a trail cam but we have about 2.5 acres and even after...

    Missing chicken.

So when the wife got home last night we did a pretty thorough walk around most of our property and no sign of the missing bird. I still find it odd that the other birds seem fine. We had a small flock of 6 birds and i have never seen them more than 5 feet from each other. They remaining 5 show...

    Missing chicken.

We knew this was a possibility when we decided to free range. There are quite a few free range flocks in the area so we were more hopeful.

    Missing chicken.

Yeah I was thinking about that possibility. I haven't seen any feathers anywhere or any other signs of trouble. The rest of the flock also seems pretty calm? Would they show signs of stress or be more inclined to hang out in the coop if they saw the other flock member taken?

    Missing chicken.

Hello this is our first year raising chickens. We have been free ranging for about 2 months with no issues yet. Today one of the girls is missing, they will be 14 weeks old in 2 days so i am thinking it may be the chicken is laying her first egg somewhere. Any experience on how long the first...

Chicks have made it to 5 weeks can we start spoiling them with BOSS or meal worms or fruit or anything fun? I have seen the treat posts but nothing about age.
