Hen unable to get up, making gurgling noises when drinking/eating

Her crop is not impacted. She ate normally yesterday - I threw my flock some dried mealworms before they went in the coop and she was out eating with everyone else. This morning her crop was empty. Her poop is normal - just cleaned some up from under her (picture attached). She is...

Hen unable to get up, making gurgling noises when drinking/eating

Found one of our hens in the coop this morning unable to get up. (yesterday she was acting/eating normally). We brought her in the house and put her under a heat lamp (78 degrees). We are in Northern California - it has been smokey and at/below freezing at night - she is near the end of her...

    Rooster attacking hen

We have a rooster that we absolutely adore. He is about a year old and is as friendly to us as any of our hens - lets us hold him, he even sleeps on my leg the same as he did when he was a chick. However, he has been very aggressive toward one of our hens for several months. We figured they...

    Help with soon-to-hatch chicks

You were absolutely right! 2 nights showing the chicks (with momma's encouragement from the top of the ramp) and they mastered it! They are definitely more clever than I imagined!

    Hen brooding in hot weather

Can I ask another question of you? This is our first time with a hen hatching chicks. After that first chick hatched, she hasn't come out of the coop at all today. When will she bring the chick out to eat and drink? Should we put some food/water in the coop for her? Or just leave her to it...

    Hen brooding in hot weather

Thank you for the reassurance. We did end up putting a picnic table umbrella over the coop to help a little. And low and behold...chick #1 hatched this afternoon. So exciting!!!!

This is Dot - one of our favorite hens! Maybe yours are the same breed. Here's hoping!

    Hen brooding in hot weather

Our hen is brooding and the temperature is very hot - 90 degrees. She is in the coop which is in full sun. I've opened the doors to help but still concerned. Can the eggs get too hot? Any suggestions how to help her?

    Help with soon-to-hatch chicks

Hi, I'm a new member. Have found tons of great info on this site - love it!! We have 5 hens and a rooster. One of our hens is brooding - we're VERY excited! Our biggest concern is that she is in the coop which is 18 inches off the ground with a ramp. Should we be worried about the chicks being...
