Surviving The New Year's Day Massacre (Unknown predator & Dog)

No Rooster (and harvest eggs daily) so she just likes to sit on them....also seems to "mother" rest of flock. I have only had them all since June but the person I "inherited" from also referred to her as Broody Hen.

Surviving The New Year's Day Massacre (Unknown predator & Dog)

Sorry if the title offends anyone but it has been a couple of rough days and I didn't know how else to start this...... Background: I awoke to chaos in the chicken yard (yes, I left the coop door open so girls could come out into their fenced yard in the AM---have done this since day one with no...

Please help! Chicken wound from dog :(

So I got the 2 most injured ones in a create in the house for the night (others are secured in coop). I honestly can't deal with traumatizing them anymore tonight so will re-evaluate and tend to wounds tomorrow. Really looks like surface wounds but worried about infection. Very stressful day as...

Please help! Chicken wound from dog :(

My gut is the wounds look worst then they are. No active bleeding and birds are moving well. My broody hen; injury is to the back of neck. Raw and exposed but not bleeding and she is moving well. #2 has about 3 quarter sized spots and is definitely banged up and in sock and has not left #1 side...

Please help! Chicken wound from dog :(

I am almost immobilized by the event. To make matters worst, i know one of my dogs were involved as I caught her in the yard but I honestly do not believe she instigated it....especially with 2 birds still missing. Her doings were left evident per normal "dog as predator behavior". My current...

Please help! Chicken wound from dog :(

Inspiring as I am currently devastated having to deal with wounded chickens as I type this. It happened early this morning and I am still numb.....don't even know the extent. I confirmed dead, 4 injured but up and moving, 3 MIA and 5 in total shock. I feel so guilty for not protecting them better.

    Adding a rooster to yard.

I do actually have one hen who thinks she is a rooster so thinks your comment is spot on. I am still unsure if all the younger ones I introduced are all hens.....but time will tell! If one happens to be a roo then I will let nature take it's course but I will wait to intentionally add a roo to...

    Adding a rooster to yard.

Thanks.....that was my thinking! I don't think I'm ready to "go there" yet! The "helper" in me wanted to help this friend by taking this roo for her but my gut tells me to wait! Just needed someone to "check" me on my thinking!

    Adding a rooster to yard.

I could use help in this area. I "rescued" an established flock of 12 mixed layers from someone moving out of state 2 months ago. they really adjusted well and continued to lay 3-4 dozen a week. Added 3 younger hens (I think-not quite sure if one is a roo or just older. ) {who where not laying...

    HIGH SPRINGS FLORIDA!!!

Hi there! I am in High Springs (5 acres by water treatment facility across from Tillman acres) and just acquired 12 chickens (don't even know what kind yet) coop, and supplies from someone who was moving out of state and could not take them. I have been wanting some for years so it was "meant to...
