I bet the contents of the ash pan from burning wood pellets would make a good dust bath for them! Never thought of that before! It certainly wouldn't freeze, here in the S.D. climate and being inside a building.
I was disgusted with the Chicken People show! Didn't know it was going to be about...
Nope, not in a bale. The neighbor busted a big round bale when stacking them so thats why he gave it to me. It is all inside now. Lots of pitchfork work but the chickens will be content with it this winter I'm sure! The hay that was closest to the ground didn't look or smell good so I threw all...
I need an answer on this question ASAP, as I have alfalfa on a trailer that my neighbor gave me but I see it is dusty! is it going to make my chickens sick if I spread it around in the quonset so they can pick & scratch thru it this winter?? I only have a few hens and a roo but certainly don't...
Thank you, Ma'am.. am looking forward to next Spring when I have my enclosed run. Came home from town today & my poor 3 hens & the roo were scared, big time! Huddled right by my deck on the house. Walked out & they all followed me right to the quonset, where they sleep! :( Sooo many hawks...
Hi Mrs. K,
You are the first person I have run across that is from South Dakota on this site. I am in the eastern part of the state & currently only have 3 hens and a rooster, thanks to hawks! I started with 5 hens and two roos but the one roo had to go.. just too much fighting over the...
I LOVE your profile pic! That is the cutest lil donkey!!
I am new to this chicken thing too but realize I need to build a chicken run or chicken tractor if I want to keep my girls alive! Had 5 hens, lost 2 to hawks! Had 2 roos but had to get rid of one. They were fighting over the ladies...
Just put it in a suet feeder like you use for birds. I make my own with peanut butter, raisins, bird seed, wheat, chicken scratch... whatever I have on hand & place foil in the feeder, put mixture in there & pop in the freezer or frig till set. Then remove the foil & your chickens will love it...
So where do we place the CDS?? I'll try anything to try & protect the chickens!! I totally enjoy taking care of them & certainly like the 3 eggs a day, lol. The one hen is molting so no eggs from her.
I cooked up a pkg. of ramen noodles today & they loved them! didn't add the seasoning, as I...
They are in the quonset and come and go as they please but have no enclosed wire run for them, which I desperately need if I want to keep enjoying those beautiful brown eggs!!
Sorry to hear of your misfortune with the chickens but I had a similar thing happen two days ago. Found her 20 feet behind the quonset where they roost with feathers all over, intestines pulled out & a lot of the meatier parts eaten. After reading, I don't think it was a hawk; sounds like they...
Ty & I think I lost another today!! Dog started barking, the chickens were squaking, I ran outside only to see a hawk flying away!! Won't know for sure till roosting time. This just sucks and makes me so sad!!
I too am taking DE everyday now for a tad over a month & I can honestly say that my left shoulder doesn't bother me near as much as it used to! A heaping teaspoon once a day is all I am using & also give it to my 3 dogs, a cat & 6 chickens in their food.
Ordered my 10 lbs. off of Amazon for...
I am a newbie to this chicken thing but I love it... till yesterday! I only have 5 ISA Brown hens (now 4) :( & 2 Bantam-cross roosters. I went out to close the door late yest. afternoon & only counted 4 hens & 2 roos so I started searching. There she laid, not 20 feet from the back door, half...
Thank you for the input on the colloidal silver. I got 5 hens about ten days ago & I also noticed one is sneezing. Other than that, no sign of illness... laying eggs, free-ranging and eating fine. Am going to add a tad bit to the water & see if I notice any difference.
I am new to this chicken...
I have power in the quonset where the chickens are so no outside cords whatsoever. It is just that the short cord on the heated dish won't reach the outlet w/out a short extension added.
Thxs for your input.
