My 2y/o Blue Andalusian hen just started crowing.

Yeah, she hasn't laid in a couple days, which isn't unusual, especially since it's been quite hot. I guess time will tell. My birds are pets and Lulu (the hen that crowed) is my absolute favorite. They free-range in my small yard from morning til night so, plenty of physical and mental...

My 2y/o Blue Andalusian hen just started crowing.

So, I've read about this as being somewhat rare, and also meaning a hormonal imbalance and/or a tumor causing a hen to morph into a roo, but I really never expected to have first-hand experience. Today, while on the phone I saw my Blue Andalusian extend her neck like a roo and let out a...

A Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome death

Thanks for the support, I appreciate it. It's hard to control how much they eat when they forage, but I limit any extras that I give them. As I mentioned, I've been resistant to the high-processing of pellets or crumbles, but you know what I'm even more resistant to? Dead birds. :hmm I've...

A Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome death

Thanks@Wyorp Rock. Yeah, I saw that. I'll clarify with the pathologist. It's a bit confusing with the body condition listed as "good" and not obese. I can say from personal observation, her keel bone protruded a good amount. She wasn't an overweight chicken. I'm not sure what large amounts of...

Farm Innovators 4250 Temp and Humidity Experiment

I ended up going with this small one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XX5P6VX/?tag=backy-20 I've only completed two hatches with it so far, but so far so good. It's small, but it's stable and I can see what's happening during hatch. The humidity can be a bit finicky but I have several alarms set...

Farm Innovators 4250 Temp and Humidity Experiment

This same thing happened to me with this exact bator! I ended up returning it. Lost 14 muscovy eggs, 6 of them which were self-blue :hit

A Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome death

Hey all, Well, I just had a pet chicken drop dead suddenly on Wed morning. The initial necropsy findings were death caused by fatal liver hemorrhage due to Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome. I'd never heard of it before the results. In the last 24 hours I've read every study I can find on the...

    In OVO vaccination

Hi! I'm so interested in your equipment and methods for your in-ovo vaccination! What did you use? Where did you puncture the egg? I gathered the supplies but ended up vaccinating as day-olds because the shell was too thick & dark to get a reliable visual on the embryo (I tried SIX different...

    Doing Fecal Floats at Home

Yeah, it's a little frustrating. The exam alone is $68 and is required to run a fecal if the bird hasn't already been seen in the last year. They're "exotic" vets that see $5000 parrots, among other exotic pets. The benefit is that they really know birds and the main vet actually has chickens...

    Doing Fecal Floats at Home

Here's another great reason to do fecals at home. I did 12 fecals yesterday on both regular & cecal eliminations and found that one of my 3 year old hens has coccidiosis. It's not e. tenella so there was no bloody stool. Poor baby has had watery eliminations for nearly a year that the vet...

    Doing Fecal Floats at Home

Epg means eggs per gram of feces. It's what determines the parasite load and when to treat. The magnification on the smaller pictures is 100x and the larger is 400x

    Doing Fecal Floats at Home

Hi @Texas Kiki Sorry, I didn't see your question. I have been doing fecals for several years now, but not very often. I'm still learning to recognize and identify egg types. Did santa bring you your equipment and have you started doing yours??? :-)

    Doing Fecal Floats at Home

Hey all, I did some fecals today to determine whether to de-worm or not. I got some decent pictures of what I think are roundworms. Also, I found a pretty good example of poultry endoparasite images. https://www.rvc.ac.uk/Review/Parasitology/poultrEggs/Common.htm My little home mini-lab. My...

I LOVE my "secret" city roo!

Sorry for the delayed response, the email notifications for the forum are going into a different folder than they should! It's going well so far. The neighbors do hear him now that he has his big-boy lungs but only when he's outside in the yard. He DOES crow... A LOT during the day, but so far...

I LOVE my "secret" city roo!

Ha! He agrees!!!!!! :gig I tried for a solid MONTH with the diapers, lmao! I tried FOUR different kinds, I even ponied up the big bucks for a flock suit... NO SUCH LUCK! He never adjusted. Now I just cover all the important furniture and he's only out roaming in the living room for a few minutes...

I LOVE my "secret" city roo!

Thanks! He actually has a couple of 1/2 black feathers in his tail but they look blue in the picture. Both Gigi and Chester are from a friend/fellow BYC member's flock who lives close-ish to me here in San Diego. I think I might be a couple over my limit of chickens too, hahahaha!
