I use 6 ft fences. They are too big to fly over. I think they don't know they could get out if they tried... though my RIR roo likes to get on top of the fence to roost.
if you put chicks under your broody hen then the chicks might not bully your silkies and they will be protected by the mom. Of course there are always those that pick on and those who submit to picking. How they act also depends on their individual personality. I used to have a RIR hen that used...
I have hatched chicks that looked exactly like that! I got a couple that were white! I hope you get feeling better so you can play with them. Almost guaranteed you will have more hatched when you get home.
It might also be that the days are getting shorter. They need a certin amount of light to lay eggs. I think they stop laying when they get less than 8 hours of light per day. Set a light on a timer for around 6 in the morning and see if that helps.
I was thinking of getting a few pheasants, but I heard they're insane and cannibals. I don't want to put pheasants in with my chickens if they're like that!
If you are gonna get babies i'd go for the first choice and keep them in the brooder with the chickens. They will learn from the chickens and if they do get mean they get to a good eating size.
