Hey Karen here is a few pics that we quickly took tonight. These are of the same chick but they both chicks look alike. She was not a happy camper when I took her out from under warm Momma. And the other one I couldn't get to so...here they are. I think they look like the Marans but not anything like an EE. But I'm only going by the head spot.

Hey Coloradoans.

Got a question. As the days have gotten shorter and 2' of snow came down last week I had a hen stop laying. So I installed a 15W light on a timer. Conventional wisdom says to have the timer come on before dawn vs. having it come on at dusk. So I had the light come on at 5:00 AM and the hens wigged out! They hated it. I didn't get an egg for three days. So I switched it to come on at 4:00 PM and turn off around 7:00 PM and all is well all four hens are laying. Anyone else ahve this happen or try this???

I add the light at night just because it is easier for me. I have to use a rechargeable light and there is no way IN HELL I am getting up that early. Not sure why they flipped out, but it is COLD in the morning. I know I get cranky when people try to get me out of a warm bed early

I'm going to be adding a light this weekend, they went from 3 to 4 eggs a day total, to 1 if I'm lucky. Lately, I haven't even been getting that... One of my chickens started molting too, so it's going to be slim pickens for a while. I may also have the most snow-paranoid chickens in the state. If they can't see bare dirt they don't even leave the coop. Hopefully a little light in there will increase productivity a little bit at least. I'm going to put a timer on it so it comes on around 5pm, they aren't in the coop usually until 530 so that should minimize the, omg who just turned on the lights kind of reaction, also if I get them up earlier, I have to get up earlier to let them out, something that would be really painful for me December to March.

I've got snow-wienies, too! If I put some hay or straw out on top of the snow after a storm, they will "touch down" and go out for some sunshine. I'm working on a couple things this fall, insulating my coop better (and more chickens in it for body heat), and adding a large plexiglass window on the south/west exposure so they get more natural light. Hoping this will stretch the laying season.

Yeah...I moved the duck pool over to the spot that gets the most sunlight. I know I can get them in to the sun that way

The run look like someone had a giant pillow fight and I am only getting 1 egg /day from 5 girls. Slackers!

Hey,

I am livin' at the base of Greenhorn Mountain. My girls love it!

My experience in the past would make me think that once we've started getting big snows and low temps at night, even if we go back into a warm cycle, my chickens think it is "time to hibernate for the winter"...sigh...
