As I sit here eating three of my last 6 eggs (no eggs for over a week now

). I can't help but wonder if anyone else in CO is still getting eggs?

If so from what breeds and how old are they? I hate the thought of having to buy store eggs all winter.

I have 3 females. I got 2 eggs this morning..but I have ducks

1 runner and 2 welsh harlequins.

Maybe you just need to get some ducks.

My Norweigan Jaerhons aren't quite old enough to lay their first eggs yet, but I am hoping they might come thru for me for winter laying. A gal in Minnesota tells me hers lay often, even thru the coldest months there.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who's girls have gone into hibernation! lol Out of 35 laying hens I get 5 eggs a day right now.

Doh!

Ducks! My husband would shoot me! Maybe after we get the goats he'll just give in realizing that there is just no way for him to win.

I only have three of laying age right now, so the fact that I got about 9 eggs a week from July to now is decent. My Leghorn has almost refused to give me eggs. She's laid one soft shelled and broken egg every 7-10 days or so, and of course they were never in the nest box, sometimes not even in the run! Sheesh! I don't think she undersatnds what the stew pot is. I might have to introduce her to it.

LOL I have one hen who is destined for freezer camp. I keep her separated from everyone else because she's such a bully. Hubby told me the other day; put her in with everyone else, if she' mean she'll be part of Thanksgiving dinner! lol

What we try to do every year is have a small coop of chicken, just a few hens, that we put lights with timers on them in the coop for. We set the lights to come on at dusk and stay on for 3-4 hours and those hens will lay through the winter. But those same hens will not lay during the summer, so it has to be a seperate coop so that the lay cycles of all your hens don't get messed up, or then you would be eggless all summer

RE: RMFF Show this Saturday, 10/24

I’m excited to meet everyone this weekend, and put some names and faces to all your avatars! The weather is going to be great, so hopefully we can all be there, and there will be lots of exhibitors and birds to check out!
We’re going to go with a 1:00 meet time – hopefully that will be convenient for everyone planning on attending either in the morning or the afternoon. For those of you who haven’t attended the show before, the parking lot is not that large, so it should be easy to meet up. I’m going to park my Mazda Tribute (tan/beige – OK – its actually Desert Sand Mica!), near the rear of the parking lot, and post a sign on it. I don’t want too park close in – because we don’t way to be in the way of exhibitors.
This is a great opportunity to not only see breeds you might not be familiar with, but also to see what good, typey birds of your breeds should look like. You can meet lots of very informative folks, make breeder contacts, and learn a lot about showing your birds if that is the direction you are headed.
Remember, the show is free to spectators and children are welcome. The RMFF Club usually has a table set up for those who would like to join. There are memberships available for nominal dues. It’s a great way to become more involved on a local level, meet and learn from the experts, and support your local poultry fancy.
For those of you who have not attended in the past, you are free to walk the aisles EXCEPT where they are judging – those aisles will be blocked off at various times until the judges are through with that particular aisle.
There is also usually a small area where you can buy refreshments and sit for a spell.
RMFF members will also have some birds available for sale at the show. You never know what you may go home with!! Cara Smith of Silver Pullet Poultry has asked me to pass along that she will have 2 pairs of Blue Silkies for sale, priced at $50 a pair. You can see her beautiful birds at www.silverpulletpoultry.net.

I will be there with lots of silkies to show. Might need to remind me of the meet though, I tend to get caught up in the show. My silkies are laying like mad right now, the rest have quit.

On a completely unrelated note, my chickens aren't laying much anymore either, I think they are going on strike or something. They see 1 inch of snow on the ground and they don't even leave the coop, bunch of weenies
