I agree with the others about swimming stimulates the oil gland and they preen to spread it all over. Mine is not interested in swimming right now too. I assume it's still a little cool. She swam everyday in the summer. Couldn't wait to jump in when I let her out to free range.
This is Buffy, my only duck. I have three chickens and just got 7 more babies two days ago. I have another baby buff coming in a week or so. I love Buffs. They are very social and love to be held if you do it on a regular basis. They are a little noisy, espesialy if you get off schedule , like...
I get the quick crete play sand at Home Depot or Lowes. Make sure its not wet or moist. The white dry sand works the best, because it doesn't seem to harden and if it gets wet it seems to dry out sooner. I have a covered run , but it will get some of it wet if the wind blowes in the rain.
I think she must be about 6 months old now. We got her in the spring, April I think and she started laying about a month ago for a week and a half and quit. Don't know why.
They look like Buffs. Mine is a hen and she has a little white on her feather tips only. No spots of white, but from what I've read it varies. Looks like maybe the one on the left is a drake. Looks like his neck is a little darker. Hard for me to tell.
After the first week and a half of 1 egg a day, although small, she just stopped. I don't know why, unless she just needed a break. She seems tired and quiet for a few days, but then she started her quacking and running around with her three young chickens like before, but no eggs yet after...
Well, it looks like I got some decisions to make. He seems to only want to try to crow at around dawn and is friendly so far. The crows are not super loud yet, so I'm hoping to be able to keep him, even though I'm not supposed to have any livestock or poultry in my subdivision. I may try a...
This run is 5' x 8' made with treated 2x6's sitting on 12" concrete square pavers in each corner. The frame is all 2 x 4's and the runners for the corrigated roofing are treated 1 x 4's inclosed with hardware cloth. It was build seperate from the coop.
I have on Buff duck and I found a 14 gal tray for sand , bricklaying I guess at Lowes in the building materials dept. I just fill it up outside the coop. She gets to swim as often as I can catch her to put her in it. she won't get in it on her own, just drinks from it, but really enjoys it when...
Age is around 2 /12 to 3 months. I think it's a Pilgrim Rock. Also have a Buff duck, Welsummer and a white Leghorn. This rock has huge feet and the comb is very red and twice the size of the others. I think cockerel too, but not positive.
I thinks its a rooster. Tries to crow, but still not sure. It's twice the size of my other two chickens, but really doesn't act that bossy. What do you think?
