    Lavender Orpington has buff streaks

Hard to make out but you can kinda of see leakage on his wing. He has more in his hackle feathers and a little in his saddle.

    Lavender Orpington has buff streaks

How would you go about improving them? By cross with black orps for example or just culling.

    building paradise for the birds

Will you nuc the feathers to kill any eggs or bugs? I have tied flies in the past and every time I see your pheasants......wow!

    Lavender Orpington has buff streaks

They were cheap so not a complete waste. Still nice compared to your run of the mill chickens.

    Lavender Orpington has buff streaks

Is it normal for Lavender orpingtons to have streaks of buff? Think they hatched in July 2017 so they are still growing. Both my hen and rooster have streaks of brown in their feathers, mostly around the neck. Rooster does have some in his wings. Overall they are +95% lavander.

Also wanted to ask if you have to worry about digging with the pheasants and escapee's.

I like the idea of the barrels but cleaning has to be a pain. What does the water setup look like?

Post Pictures of Your Hoop Coops!

Fold them in half like a teardrop then strap them together and then down to your truck. Mine fit fine in a F150 anything smaller like a ranger or S10 would be a challenge.

It's actually vinyl siding. I didn't do a starter strip but should have. Start at the bottom and work your way up to the peak, let the last piece overlap the other side. I didn't know how to attach the last piece, ended up drilling a hole through the vinyl to tie it down which worked okay. I...

    2x4 welded wire on tractor?

I put 2x4 wire over my cattle panels and have not had a problem. I did put aluminum around the perimeter to keep raccoons from reaching in. I was in process of finishing the coop, vinyl siding is installed on the other side now.

    Mixing own feed

Gluten does not pass thru to the meat of the animal or bird. The only reason to feed gluten free grains would be if you can't keep the feed in a separate place away from your family to avoid cross contamination.

Ideas for Low Wattage water heating and low maintenance feeding

This is my first winter with this setupe. I use a 15 watt aquarium heater in a 2gal bucket. This is plugged into a thermo cube receptacle so it only comes on when it needs to. It was in single digits for two nights in a row and kept it from freezing completely. The only downside was that the...

Hatching Egg Myths - Tell me yours

Not sure about duck eggs. I think turning them before incubation is done for the same reason you turn during incubation. Also one thing I didn't mention before was that the eggs were kept at about 40-60 degrees in my basement. Here is some good info on hatching duck eggs...

    Fermenting feed

My whole point was that this could cause higher concentrations of medication after sitting in a bucket of water for few days. If it's not an issue show me the research....

    Fermenting feed

So they don't have one of those "use as directed" labels on the bag?! I can ferment anything, even the old food tucked in the darkest part of my fridge. But would I want to?

    Fermenting feed

I'm no expert but I would not ferment medicated feed. Your basically making a chemical soup causing the medicated feed to leetch out. I would suggest fermenting scratch grain and feed the medicated dry.
