welcome to BYC. Im currently building my coop too during my free time. Dont forget to buy the supplies needed to feed and water your chickens. For example im making an automatic water and feed system so ill be buying PVC and chicken water nipples to get that set up. Luckily I had a bunch of 2x4s...
check your local law first. For example, most counties will allow people to own chickens, however, ONLY for personal use. Plus, some cities also have a limit of how many chickens you can have and a business like this, will probably only benefit with high numbers of hens. Now chances are nobody...
for 8 hens youll need a coop that is at least 32 square feet inside. Look for anything that is 6'x6' or maybe even 6'x5', im not sure if thats pushing it. For sure it wont be cheap tho. As mentioned above, your best bet will be local classifieds.
Wow, that looks really nice. However, mine will mostly be confined in a run, so I wanted to make it as weather friendly as possible.
Depending on how much room I have I might add some insulation too. The thing is that my coop will be 6' at the tallest point vs 5' tall at the lowest angle. As...
I started working on my coop now, and was wondering what type of roofing do you guys use for hot weather?
I was initially planning on using corrugated or ribbed steel roof panels. However, we have extreme summers, and im wondering if shingles are better to keep the coop a bit cooler. Or do you...
Hi and welcome to BYC!
Thats pretty cool what youre doing. Here is a link that mentions how cities like anne arbor, michigan; ft collins, colorado; and south portland, maine recently chenged rules to allow or increase the amount of chickens one can keep.

OP, i personally think 600 is way too much for that second coop. 400 would definitely be a better price, or even TSC has a coop for 400 that looks very nice. It claims to fit 15 chickens which isnt true, but im sure it can hold 5 chickens. I forgot the exact dimensions but it looked very...
We have similar weather to phoenix, so that good to know. Im still designing the coop and I have plenty of ventilation set, plus its going to be right next to a large block fence, so it should have plenty of shade. Im going to look into a mist system tho. Sounds like a good idea. I remember my...
So i read that black australops also do well confined and in hot weather. I was a bit concerned due to the heat and dark color but theyre breed originates from australia, so that works for me
I should be all set
How many chickens are you planning on having?
I personally find sheds really useful especially if it has electricity and windows. So if you have the time and space, I would build a separate coop. That way it also gives you the chance to build it to your liking.
So far Im thinking:
1) ameraucana
2) welsummer
3) barred rock
4) white leghorn
5) isa brown
Im also thinking about a golden campine but i hear they do better free range than confinement.
Im thinking about starting out with 6 hens, so maybe ill get 2 ameraucanas and i should be set
Good to hear! Luckily we dont have bad winters here, only the terrible heat.
Originally I wanted to get rhode island reds, but ive read a lot that they dont do as well in the extreme heat. Plus I have a few friends locally who have chickens, and warned me that their RIR didnt do well in our...
Welcome!
Im still working on details for mine, but here is my design so far.
The coop is 6' deep, 4' wide, and the run totals 6' deep and 12' in length. Ive since changed the coop to be 5' wide instead of 4, and the nesting boxes will extended to the outside of the coop instead of being...
thats good to hear since I love their colors. I read they also do well in confinement so Ill add them to my list.
So far Im considering:
1) ameraucana
2) welsummer
3) barred rock
4) white leghorn
5) isa brown
6) golden campine ????(im reading they do a lot better free ranging)
Well im not getting a rooster so I wont be able to breed them. But so far it looks like the ameraucana, leghorn, and welsummer are my top choices.
Anyone have any experience with barred plymouth rocks in hot weather?
Yeah, thats what I meant by local classifieds lol. Every once in a while they do show up, its just very rare.
It sure does. It looks like ill have to travel a little to find a good breeder.
This. Everytime I make a list of everything I need for a project, I always end up either forgetting or needing something else.
Try to include all the small things that you might need like wood glue (for nesting boxes), screws, hinges, sandpaper, chicken wire, heating lamp (if necessary)...
