THREAD SUMMARY AND NECROPSY RESULTS
Hi all - we got fairly conclusive necropsy results back this week. It looks like Noodle was battling a chronic, likely hereditary/genetic kidney disease. For the well versed, she was diagnosed with severe necrotizing nephrosis with gout tophi (renal gout) and...
Hi everyone. Noodle died peacefully in her sleep last night. I really do feel like we were all in this together, so I know it must be upsetting for many of you as well. I hope this experience and this thread lives to serve a broader purpose, and can help many others in the future. We'll be...
Ok, silly question, but once I squirt the cream on my finger, do i open her beak and just smudge it in little bits at a time for her to swallow? I also have a medicine dropper but am thinking it'll be too thick.
I'm game to try anything at this point. Is Nystatin or Miconazole something I can get over the counter someplace? Our vet only works a few days a week and feed stores in our part of California are subject to intense rules about stocking livestock medication.
If I'm thinking about it, she does...
Hi all - continued thanks. We might be reaching the end here. Poor Noodle is rapidly declining and I'm not sure what I'll find when I come home from work today. Here's what I do know:
She actually seemed to be eating more over the last few days. Still not enough but certainly more interested in...
A fine idea, but alas, not the problem here. We've been feeding her a lot of vet prescribed antibiotics and now the NutriDrench, so we get a close look at her mouth every day. I'll shine a light down there for good measure during our next NurtiDrench feeding though.
Ok, a few updates for you folks!
I haven't been able to get the vet on the phone, so no updates from her just yet.
I'm starting to think it's crop related, but am not 100% sure it's pendulous crop. It's really hard to tell if her crop is emptying over night because she rarely has much in it...
More answers to questions:
She's not as droopy as she looks in these pictures. I had to put her on a slippery countertop (thoroughly sanitized afterward) to get her in the light, and so she wasn't properly balanced. When she has her "bad days" she looks like this, but most days she's upright...
I've actually been reading your thread and have been following along since the symptoms seem so similar! I haven't tried NurtiDrench but I'm def grabbing some to have on hand. So glad to hear it's been working for Pepper (right?).
She's has probiotics in her water now, but she's been on...
You guys are geniuses and so helpful! Thank you!
The vet's going to call me back tomorrow and now I can sound super smart when I ask about bacterial cultures. Will also see if she wants to brunch with a friend tomorrow morning rather than eating with the whole flock. I'll ask the vet about...
Hi all - thank you so much for your insight. Exactly what I was hoping to get from this group! More info and answers to questions below:
I haven't seen a solid looking poop out of her since September and was taking her in to clean her sludgy butt fluff in the sink once a week. The diarrhea got...
Hi all - hoping to tap the community for more ideas here. We've seen two vets and are not sure what's going on. Here are the deets:
1.5 year old hen has been having diarrhea for months - mostly clear liquid with bits of foraged plants.
Significant weight loss and falling - she's an orpington...
Hi Junebuggena - Per my last post, we will be moving the food, water and heat lamp out of the coop soon, and the area is completely isolated from wind due to the positioning, gate, and the corrugated roofing. No coop is perfect, but I think this is serving us quite well considering how few...
Hey aart! We don't get any snow where we live up in Northern California near the ocean...we really only get heavy rain a month or two out of the year. I sat in the coop during a really heavy wind the other day, and the plastic didn't so much as budge. Because of the drastic angle, the rain seems...
Hi all - All this advice has been extremely helpful! Thank you! We incorporated a lot of it into the final run design, especially the ideas about water run off, roofing angles, and aprons. A big thank you to my father-in-law for spending his Christmas vacation lending his expertise as well...
Hi all - Thanks in advance for your help.
I have an orpington who seems to want to close her eyes a lot. Not sure what's going on. Here are the details:
--She's about 9 weeks old
--Going through a juvenile molt
--Also seems to blink really hard, like her eyelids are heavy
--Happening for...
