Well, sadly he didn't make it through the night. I isolated him as you suggested, but he never did gain any strength. He remained lethargic and weak. Thankfully everyone else seems to be doing fine and mamma hen's happily taking care of them.
Last night (probably more like early this morning) we got a new hatch. When mama hen left the nest with her babies he was left behind. At first I thought he was just tired from hatching, but there this round red thing on his butt. Not sure what it is or how to explain it better, but here's a...
This family has four black sheep and a red-headed step child :D
The one with problems was black, but I'm not 100% sure on which one it was. I think it was the one with white eyebrows on the bottom left.
I read about shrink-wrapping and was worried about that so I got my finger wet and moistened it last night. This morning I checked in and he was mostly free! his hinder parts were glued onto the membrane so I moistened it again and it came right off. I took most of it off, but the umbilical cord...
Here's a picture. He's still kickin' about and the pip hole from earlier is a bit bigger and looks like a little rip now. You can see it near the egg shell to the left in the picture.
Checked in on the hatching eggs, one has hatched so far, but one has me worried. most of the shell has been removed from the membrane, just a few fragments remain stuck to it, but the membrane itself seems to still be in one piece with just a little hole from the pip. I'm not sure if lacking the...
Thank you all for answering, and so quickly too! These pictures are lovely, and the crele is just gorgeous. I didn't know the particulars about the barring gene being a lack of color, that's rather interesting. Are the barring and stripe gene dominant or recessive?
Ever since I was little and found out there were "zebra chickens" I fell in love with them. Now I'm curious, are there "tiger chickens" (barring, but with red and black)? or barring with any other colors?
These chicks were hatched from eggs in our own flock, and I paid close attention to who the mother was. The thing is, some of them don't look anything like their mother or father... or any of the other chickens we have! The first three I'm mostly sure who the mother is, but the last one (the...
Hi, we've hatched 5 healthy chicks and now they're 5 weeks old and I've been trying to figure out their gender. Here are some pics and my current guesses:
Lemonade (she used to be yellow, but this name is becoming a little less fitting now):
I think she's female because her comb is small and...
