Nearly a week later and she's still poking about normally. Early this morning, while it was still cooler, she wasn't panting. Back to panting this afternoon. Must be that she's just taking the heat harder than the others.
Day 4 and she's still seemingly normal in every other way. Haven't seen anything raise flags in an examination. It has been hot. Today, the other chickens in her flock were also panting. I was out in it and soaking wet with sweat. She's just over a year old (born Apr/May '17) and had her...
LOL - henopause.
If she had her wings out, I'd feel better about it just being heat. It has been hot here - and humid. But, she's not holding them out even at the top of the afternoon. But, she acts normal in every other way. I tried to catch her and she was sufficiently difficult to catch...
I've got a hen that I've noticed panting for the past 3 days. No other chickens are. It's been hot, so I thought maybe she was just hot. Made sure they had fresh water and moved on.
After noticing her panting while none of the others are, I decided to check her out. She seems to be acting...
Here are 4 possible lineages of this unique chick. There is no possibility of a different father or grandfather unless someone snuck in the coop at night and did some hanky panky. Since chickens don't have opposable thumbs and raccoons have little incentive to perform such shenanigans, I'm...
Here is a picture from the day this chick was born:
Here are some from today showing his tail and wing feathers more close up:
I'll be interested to see what this chick turns into.
By the way, "Elvis" from an earlier post died a few years ago and doesn't have anything to do with the genealogy of any chickens in the line I'm dealing with right now.
I brought his case up as an example of when we clearly had "cross-pollination", so to speak, among breeds which clearly...
It's hard to say at this point. When our Silkies are getting their first feathers to replace their baby down, the wings will appear a bit like regular feathers until they get out a little more. His (or her) wings look roughly like the others - with the exception of the coloration.
All the...
I guess I'm just used to Silkies being... well, Silkie-ish! We've predmominantly had Black Silkies from which everything - everything turned out black with black skin, feathered legs, and five toes.
My avatar is a picture of Elvis. He was Silkie in every single point - except he was hard...
Awfully big feet leads me to believe a broiler of some sort. The comb development while it's still so downy would lead me to believe it is either a cockerel or from a genetic line that has a very large and prominent single comb.
That's my guess anyway.
I will bore you with some background in the next post, but I have a couple of Silkie Chicks like I haven't seen before among our plain Black and White flocks.
This Silkie Chick is the offspring of a Rooster that is White, and one of four hens - 3 white and 1 black. Here it is pictured beside...
Scamper (pictured), a black non-bearded Silkie Rooster, just turned 5 years old last month. Since the day he hatched (literally) he's been hyperactive. No matter how much attention we've given to calm him down, he will usually go nuts if you try to get in his coop or pick him up. The last...
Lucky has made a good turn today. He's certainly not out of the woods yet, but his comb has pinked and plumped up and he's much more alert. He's still off his balance, but he was trying to preen a little bit (without falling over). If he's concerned about his looks and hygiene, I consider...
Lucky has been maintaining. He sleeps a lot, but will wake up and take a bite or drink and kind of nod off again.
We had to take a trip over the weekend and were faced with a choice of cancelling or taking Lucky with us. We decided to take him with us. We prepared a pet carrier and he made...
Here's one of Lucky when he was well - for comparison:
His comb over the last couple of days compared to normal:
Normal Pale (Yesterday) Getting color back (today)
Thanks!
An update - his comb seems to be more properly colored today. However, he still keeps his eyes closed a lot like he's sleeping, although when you touch him on his head, he is alert and opens his eyes wide to see what's going on. He is still pretty immobile otherwise. He just stays...
Anyone have ideas?
Lucky is pretty special and I hate to lose him to something like this without the best fight we can put up. https://www.backyardchickens.com/g/i/5170091/lucky/sort/display_order/
Here is the story of Lucky's beginning that some of you shared with us -...
