    cockatiel is not happy

Birds tend to be afraid of hands... especially when they're stressed. I'd just have your daughter sit by the cage, talk to the bird, let the bird know she can be trusted. Don't ever try to catch a frightened 'tiel-- if she holds her hand out to the bird and he hops on, you're golden, but if...

    My 7 yr old's B Day present...............

Sweet feed for donkeys? Especially a baby? Not a good idea at ALL. (Actually for any equine-- you are asking for metabolic issues including founder in the future.) I'm not up to date on donk nutrition, but definitely ask around. Vets are not necessarily knowledgeable either. The milk replacer...

    Sorry horse people--'nother question

Frankly with a 2yo draft cross I would be riding once or twice a week, IF THAT, and doing groundwork another day or two a week (NO LUNGING) and having him turned out the rest of the time. (I would personally never start a baby before 3yo except to sit on him a few times.) I don't think he'll be...

    Sorry horse people--'nother question

for crying out loud... a pelham on a BABY? sheesh. you would be best in a D or full cheek snaffle- smooth, either double jointed or curved bars, of medium thickness... IMHO. (the D or full cheek are for aid in steering and so the bit cannot be pulled through the mouth in extreme circumstances-...

    Attn: Horse people...Teeth floating question

Youngsters need their teeth checked/done every 6 months... mature horses every year. Sometimes nothing needs to be done or just a quick swipe over rough spots- but they always need checking. Monitor your horse carefully after he's had his teeth done- if he is chewing oddly or seems sore have...

Trailering... Tie or not to tie?

We don't tie my DWB mare because she will pull back if tied in the trailer... we do leave her lead on her and secure it loosely though. The other three we tie- but they can move their heads around. We have a very roomy 2h straight. The issue you have with not tying is if they can get under...

My goat tore her leg open!!!!!

Just having dealt with multiple wounds- especially with leg wounds you DO NOT want to leave the bandage off... dust/dirt/pathogens can get in very easily... the skin has to be knitting (which means a lot of healing for a cut to the bone) before you can realistically leave the bandage off. you...

My goat tore her leg open!!!!!

Human meds aren't going to help you much in this instance. Get to the feed store and ask them for what you need (quality ointment- furazone is not good, highly carcinogenic, i would avoid it; cotton sheeting; vetwrap) and go to the pharmacy and get nonstick gauze pads and gauze rolls. change...

My goat tore her leg open!!!!!

If it's been 6-8 hours you've lost the window for stitching, btw. Call the vet. She'll need antibiotics and probably a tet booster and the cut could have compromised tendons/tendon sheaths/ligaments if she can't bear any weight at all. You need to have cotton wrap, sterile nonstick gauze...

    Too broody

My BO hen keeps going broody. I kick all three of the girls out of the coop for the day- that generally gets her to stop (at least until someone forgets to collect eggs and she gets the bright idea to start sitting again).

rhode island red or buff orpington?

My RIR hen Red was definitely the dominant one and rather loud. Also sort of skittish. My BO's are friendly but not overly so- they aren't huge fans of being loved on but they will come when called, follow you around, etc. One of my BO's goes broody at the sight of an egg- the other two think...

Finally I took some pics of my filly!

Makes sense then if she's not been handled much. I trim, and see a lot of feet that are a direct detriment to the horse... and on babies you're affecting growing joints as well... which is why I was concerned. I have a mare who's front legs are crooked- her knee joints don't line up at all-...

Finally I took some pics of my filly!

Lovely girl... she looks like she'll be fun. She has the chestnut mare thing goin on Can you get a mask on her if the flies are bothering her? Or roll-on fly repellent if she doesn't like spray bottles yet? Dunno what it is with babies and spray stuff... I think it's one of those universal 'DO...

    Small Automatic Waterer?

I'm looking for a smaller auto-waterer for my 3 girls. Anyone know of any that would work? We used to have a dog waterer that would have done the trick but, alas, we tossed it when the dogs decided they didn't like it anymore

Hey to all you dressage riders!

Adjustable saddles do not fit all horses... Wintec/Bates have many issues as well... Up to a MW gullet they are generally OK- but past that the gullets actually torque the tree and are not a good choice for a wide horse. Pressure points are easily made. I'm guessing your guy will probably be a...

will a 9yo dog be willing to change food?***update***

Our dogs change food on a regular basis as they need or decide. Dogs are dogs... they love to eat... why wouldn't they change? They steal table scraps just fine... Get her on some decent food for sure.

All 4-H'ers...6yr old wants to get into horses, how to do it????

Do NOT purchase a horse- do NOT purchase a horse. The biggest mistake you can make right now would be that one. Find a GOOD trainer, someone who has a lot of experience and is safe, with good lesson horses who are well-cared for. Once your kid is riding the pants off of every lesson horse and...

    Escaped donkey story - sad

It's not hard to secure gates... I have yet to see an equine be able to undo a snap. In fact, our gates at home are all locked with a length of chain with a snap on it- it's pretty horse-proof. If it's undone- they know it- and if there isn't a pile of food in the corral they are outta there...
