Naming a horse

dang, I keep sticking my foot in my mouth over and over again. Registration 1-90 days or before June 30th is the least expensive and that has passed by already. If you register her before Sept. 30th of this year it is 25.00 for members or 70.00 for non-members. The transfer fee to your name from the mare owner's name is an additional 15.00 for members or 60.00 for non-members.

well that helps me a bit in the price range. I didnt' realize it was so exspensive to register a horse..Is this just a one time fee though?? Or do I have to do it yearly??
I will definately have to register her before the Sept. 30th deadline than to at least get that price...

That's actually quite a good deal compared to many other registries (I am thinking of thoroughbreds and various warmbloods), so it could be a whole lot worse

It's a one time fee.

Good luck,

Some of the women that I ride with own Paints and they love the frequent rider program (or equivalent, that's the Arab assoc. name) so they do have stuff for the non-show people.

American Indian or Spanish names are always a safe choice for Paints, halcon = hawk, rio rojo = red river, reina = queen, for a few examples, a good Spanish dictionary could help you out

Lakota:
Washte' = good, shungmanitu = wolf, kola = friend,
(look online or ask a university for more)

Well we have picked.....

'Leokadia'
(lee o KAH dee ah)
means..cares for others

for the horses name.

We are registering her as..."Run-A-Mucks Leokadia". Don't plan on putting the -'s in there as someone else suggested they might not be allowed. So just to be safe we will probably just leave them out.

We are using one of the other names on her paper too, just incase this one might be choosen...Still have to pick a 3rd choice though for a name....

And one of our Shetland ewes that we got the same day as the horse didn't have a name yet so we gave her the name "Maja".

Have the registration papers filled out though as best I know...
Thanks for everyones help...

Shawna, hey APHA does have a place where you can check to see if the names you have chosen for your filly are already taken. I checked for you and your first choice for her name has not been taken yet so you should be good there.

To check out names at APHA go to www.apha.com then at the top of the page click on apha online to the left of the page down near the bottom you will see a category for NAME SEARCH click on this and type your names in the box provided and it will show you if that name is already chosen.

You should only have to use part of the parents names if you have an agreement with the breeder. We show dogs and our puppies that go to show homes are required to use Jamboree (my kennel name) otherwise it is up to the owner. For pets they are able to put whatever they like and can still use Jamboree, but I do not require it. My horse has parts of his parents names because he was originally a race horse. Hope that helps.

I think that's fun that you were considering "Maja."

I have a 2 yr old Arabian colt that I named Amajestad. (Majestad meaning "majesty" in Spanish and I added the A in honor of his mother.) I affectionately call him "Maj" while everyone else at the barn calls him "Maja." Thought it was kind funny. Also, I'm in Wisconsin too so I thought that was a neat coincidence. :)

p.s. just be thankful she isn't an Arabian. It cost me $150 to register my foal at 2 months (and I'm a registered member of the Arabian Horse Association)! Oh well. It's the price for having an Arabian.
