Hen hasn't been able to stand for weeks?

She's nearly 3 months old. I understand that I will have Marek's disease present for ages but I have only had one real instance which is the one that died. But she had always been smaller and had cocci when she was a tiny chick so I'm not completely convinced it was Marek's. I also feel like...

Hen hasn't been able to stand for weeks?

Hello there! I have posted another thread about my chicken, Lucky, who started limping and then couldn't walk at all and died. I was told that it was probably Marek's disease and I had come to terms with that. However, one of my other chickens was having chicks and I was terrified that they...

    Advice on open coops!!!!!!!

Yeah, we get frozen water quite a bit. I'm up at 5 in the morning before the chickens wake up so that gives me time to take the ice layer off (side note, I love the sound of the ice breaking on the ground. Sounds like glass breaking). During the day it doesn't really freeze until the sun goes down.

    Advice on open coops!!!!!!!

I think my rooster is part silkie They'll roost during the day but at night they just prefer to be in the hay. I always thought it was strange but that's the way they like it haha

    Advice on open coops!!!!!!!

Oh that's a good idea. They actually don't have roosts. They never used them. They have heaps of hay at the bottom and they snuggle themselves tightly together.

    Advice on open coops!!!!!!!

Oh wow! It sounds similar to my set-up. I have a roof as well I might add. I still am looking for the perfect house to give them. I would just feel a little more kind. In winter where I am it can get below 0 degrees Celsius so quite cold.

    What Breed is Daisy?

In my experience the happier and healthier they are the bigger the egg. My Isa lays huge eggs too.

For sure Isa Brown! Looks like my gorgeous Precilla. They're beautiful chickens with great personalities that get even better with age!

    Advice on open coops!!!!!!!

Hi there! I was wondering if anyone has 'open coops' and how they feel about them especially during winter. By open coop I mean with no closed doors. I have wood panelling on the walls and then two dog kennels with a large log in front to stop some draft. I have two elderly chickens and then a...

Mother hen attacking 7 week old chicks.

Well he was just chasing them around but they didn't like it.

Mother hen attacking 7 week old chicks.

I've separated them because the rooster was attacking them so it's just Bailey and the chicks free ranging now.

    Feeding grit and oyster shells

That's basically all I do and I just let them kick it around. I don't give them too much and only offer it every few days. I don't think there really is any other way of giving it to them.
