Thanks everyone! I knew the Duck Forum would be helpful. As long as they aren't fliers, I think my friend will be super happy! I love the Welsh Harlequins (have two myself that I adopted as adults, so didn't recognize the duckling stage!). I hope they do end up being some Khaki Campbell...
These two sweet ducks are about two weeks old and we have no idea what type they are. They were adopted by a friend who got them from a school. She has built a full enclosure around her little pond and had her contractor build a duck house for them...but they don't even know whether these cute...
Most of my friends who have lost ducks and hens to birds of prey have told me that the hawks generally swoop in for the kill and rarely ever eat the bodies...headless and heartless (and lifeless) poultry found attacked. These prey birds are swift, accurate and determined! We live in a suburban...
Found two small sized eggs in a hay bale today! Hooray my SLW and my GLW have started laying! My Silver Spangled Hamburg who supposedly will lay white eggs has yet to lay an egg. The eggs are smaller than a regular egg but bigger than a fart egg. Will Wyandotte eggs be as big my other eggs? I...
Make a recipe called a Breakfast Strata! It uses 8 eggs in one fell swoop. You can even make it then freeze it for later or make the strata and give the strata away--people will eat that! ....just google those words and you'll find these recipes for a yummy bread casserole.
I had two who died just like yours...it was like a "failure to thrive". They seemed fine for the first 24 hours then went downhill. I was able to keep one alive for another week, but she too died. It's so hard when that happens!
So the chickens live be:hulow? Or are you going to plant things below? I am always confused whether I should fence my chickens in or fence my plants in >>>>
I ended up caging in all my plants.
So only things that are close to the ground or covered by wire will make it.
My alliums under wire.
Cabbages and beets that were wintersown had to be placed under cover.
It's not a great look but it works! I get to keep my chickens and have fresh flowers...
I did do the flush-free Niacin but it may have been late. Started noticing this when they were already three days old. At first I thought it was their funny waddle, then I realized that it really was them not able to walk. I started the Niacin but they got weaker and weaker. When they arrived...
Do you think if I went to my local feed store that ducklings a few days old might be healthier? The two were shipped by themselves with a heat pack and seemed to recover fine the first few days, but the first one died within the next day and I hand fed/watered her for hours through the night but...
They died about 1 week apart. My sweet Harley died this afternoon. I am devastated.....I re-checked their feed making sure it was non-medicated, and I re-checked the vitamins, but I think it was just that the two were not strong enough. They walked funny from day one and I think it was "failure...
Mine are outside (well in garage) with heat lamps and are two weeks and four weeks. My DH built a moveable teen brooder for our chickens and now I use it over the duck pool. They seem to be actually plenty warm because they don't really hang out anywhere near the lamp. During the day, both the...
This is my chicken and duck proofing. Essentially since my little voracious things will attack just about all my veggies, I have to keep everything protected.
Protection for my lettuces:
Protection for my alliums:
Protection for my cabbage/beets:
Just call us the "pen"-itentiary...my...
I decided after reading your post that I needed to move them to their bigger brooder. I put them in the kiddie pool to see if it will prod her to exercise a bit more. I noticed today that she seems more active in the larger space, so maybe I should have moved her a bit sooner from the small 2x2...
