My neighbors have had chickens for 30 years and have never had problems with bears breaking into their coop, and they have bears in the yard regularly during fruit season. Not sure if chickens are tops on the list of food items. The beekeepers use a high voltage fence.
What is tops on their...
I started with some Langshans, but then added Svarthonas and some BBS Ameraucanas, letting them mix it up. They are all great free rangers. These are the two cockbirds, one a fibro F1 Langshan over Svarthona, and the newest, not yet a year old, straight Langshan. I wonder if the F1 direction...
Well, whatever the reason they were developed, it is sad for me that the original characteristics are no longer available in China. When I first acquired Langshans, I was somewhat dismayed to find that they, like most show animals, had been bred with little regard for retaining function, and...
So that could make sense, a regional breeding up to a kind of archetypal, symbolic version of a fowl, with as much beauty and nobility possible for sacrificial purposes?
I was wondering about the effects of the Cultural Revolution, good to know. And also, your comment about Buddhists being vegans… I remember seeing a reference in one of these old articles about the chickens being used for sacrifices, which also seemed highly unlikely for a Buddhist monastery...
Fascinating trying to find the way through history, and what was real versus legend. I remember seeing another older source writing about importing to the US, if I remember correctly, and how much variation there was in the original birds in China. I can see the possibility of some selected...
Here are two links to early Western writings on the history of the Langshan. Very different story. I wonder if the original imported stock was a regional variation?
“Every Courtyard Containing Large Black Fowls - M. Soulié de Morant tells me he was greatly surprised to find all the inner...
Hi Folks, this is going around FB along with the video below, and I am trying to track down the OP as many are wondering about the breed of the roo. Maybe Australorp? It says she is Shasta Schlitt and a BYC member, but I am not getting hits from the search engine. Any ideas? Thanks!
Large birds for hawk deterrence was the primary reason I got the Langshans. I started with electric fence, never got much of a charge off the solar and with grandkid toddlers around I didn’t want lethal levels anyway, so let it slide. Thankfully, not sure why, at this point the situation is...
Yes, the only area around here that is safe is the garden behind an 8’ high fence.
The ”thinking” behind this is from hearing about dogs getting into fenced runs and wiping out the lot. I know of two people locally who had this happen. So, hoping that if I ever get rampaging dogs, some birds...
This might not load from the link, but you should be able to regoogle it…It was written by the niece of the man who brought Langshans over from China.

I think you just answered your own question, with low perches being recommended for all large breeds. I was told this by a show breeder and also experienced the problem twice, enough proof for me.
That said, other people have other priorities and are willing to tolerate a breed’s shortcomings...
Well, I started with Langshans, and after I got them the breeder said that in general Langshans were too large to be able to use a roost without leg problems developing from jumping down off the roost. The original cockbird and his replacement offspring became lame over time. As this breed was...
Oh, was thinking more about this, and using heavy metal bioaccumulated stock. I started using biochar as a soil amendment, and was kind of skeptical of using it as a feed additive because activated charcoal is used for acute poisoning, as it absorbs the toxins. I wondered if it would absorb and...
I make and use biochar from burning my annual slash pile of fruit tree and berry cane prunings. All you have to do is quench the coals before they all burn out. In order to do that you need enough water to rinse most ash off. I use it in the chicken bedding to inoculate it. The chickens free...
Man, does it!! Thank you for your explanation. I hesitate to speculate what your mind is like post caffeine, but really looking forward to reading all your other posts. I’ll stick with the fish meal. Hoping some day some kind of affordable dried insect meal comes along. Anyone farming termites...
