We have a warren hen, she was three years old last August. She seemed quite lethargic over winter and has had some weird droppings which smelt like bad egg. She made it through the winter though (it's spring now - northern England). She seemed okay for a while, but now she seems really...
Ginger is better! When we took her back to the vet's, everything was clear and there were no polyps after all - the five days of antibiotics really seemed to clear everything up. So it was just the result of a partial prolapse. Her feathers are growing back now and we're hoping to put her...
Hi Shadrach,
the vet is Wendy Lane Vets. They have a website, if you want to add that to your database. We live on the edge of the countryside, so I suppose the vets have to expect people to turn up with hens! But maybe that's not always the case, I've never been to another vet's.
Here's a photo of Ginger, just so you can see what she looks like from her good end! Thanks for your replies and support, I will let you know how we get on at the vet's on Wednesday.
Just to let you know, we took Ginger to the vet's on Friday afternoon. He cleaned away the scabby stuff and showed me that there were some pink innards protruding underneath. He said it was a partial prolapse. He cleaned out her rear end and pushed the innards back inside. Innards sounds...
She seems to be eating and drinking well. Her rear end is looking slightly messy again today, but not too bad. We are going to give her another bath this afternoon. Please could you tell me if you use any particular ointment? Thanks.
Thanks so much for all your help and support! We are pretty sure she has laid an egg this morning. There is a small amount of orange-brown staining on it, which is the same colour as some discoloration that we've noticed next to poop on their bedding recently. She still seems pretty happy. I...
Here are a few more photos. The first one is a "profile". I hope you can see the dark bit that's sticking out of her rear end, against the background of my flowery apron! We are not sure what this is - we're not sure whether it's just poop or something else - it won't wash off and seems to be...
That must have been a tough experience! - okay, if I use vaseline I will use it very sparingly! Maybe a little coconut oil or vegetable oil.
I felt Ginger's abdomen this morning and it feels soft. We will bath her again today and try to get more of the crust off. We don't have vet care in...
I will give her a proper bath today! Is it a good idea to put some tea tree oil in? Lavender oil?? Also, I don't have baby shampoo, but I can get some - or is any mild shampoo fine?
I had wondered about lubricant - would rubbing Vaseline in help?
Thanks so much for all your suggestions.
Poor you. It's really hard when we feel we've made a wrong decision, I'm full of sympathy for you. We all learn from experience, it's just really hard sometimes not being able to turn the clock back. All the best for the future.
Hi, thanks for all your replies, we really appreciate it. We don't have a rooster. Not sure why the hens are looking rough at the moment :( They had already gone into roost when my husband got home, but we got Ginger out and bathed her vent a little. I'm afraid we haven't got all the feaces...
Thanks for your replies. It doesn't seem to be bothering her at all so far. We will bathe her a little later, when my husband is around to help, and then we will post some better photos.
Hi,
Could anybody tell me what is wrong with this hen's vent please? As you can hopefully see, it's not got many feathers on, and the feathers that are there are stuck together, and there are some droppings stuck to her rear end. She seems quite happy though.
Another hen in our little flock...
Hi,
This is the first time we've hatched under a broody. She is a great sitter - we only bought some fertile eggs because she was clearly determined to hatch something!
Yesterday was day 21 and I peeped in a few times when she was off the nest. It looked as if two out of six eggs might have...
Hi - back again. Our hen did eat a few of the fertile eggs, but I wonder if I hadn't got a thick enough layer of sawdust underneath her and they got cracked because of that. I've given her more bedding now and there are still six eggs...
I think they should hatch next Sunday and I wanted to...
I've hatched in an incubator once before and now we're hatching under a broody for the first time. I think they should hatch next Sunday and I wanted to ask about food. When we used an incubator, we fed chick crumb - is that the same with a broody - or does the hen regurgitate food and feed it...

Rosie the hen has eaten one of the eggs she is supposed to be hatching! She has been sitting on them for two days. Could it be that the egg she ate was no good, and she ate it instead of pushing it out of the nest? Or should I give her some extra protein? What about a boiled, mashed egg (not...
