Hello and welcome! If the quail isn't limping and hobbling and getting picked on by the other birds, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It may have gotten dislocated or broken or something like that. If it doesn't impede the quail's ability to be a quail, then it's probably fine. But monitor it...
That's kinda what I figured too. I transferred them to open cages, but I might build a box that they can get into under the heat lamp to trap in some of that warmth.
I've been thinking about putting my 3-week-old coturnix quail out in the garage. Been in the upper 40's during the day and upper 30's at night. The garage reflects those temperatures. Was going to leave in their heat lamps. Too cold this early or do you think they can handle it?
Quail are better than chickens about laying through winter, but they can still sometimes take a break when the days are short.
Also, your male to female ratio is potentially dangerous/stressful to your birds. It's recommended that there be at least four females for every male in your flock...
LED should be fine. I always go for something along the lines of "full spectrum" to mimic actual sunlight as best as possible, but my quail live indoors 24/7.
Keep an eye out for pasty butt. I had a quail chick come down with a bad case of it during its first 2 to 3 days and even now at day 16 it's still stunted from that temporary lack of growth.
Hi quail fam. I've raised four rounds of quail chicks so far. I usually pull the heat lamp at 3 or 4 weeks. First I turn it off during the day and then on at night to see how they behave, then off all together if they look okay.
My current batch of coturnix and (one surprise A&M) are two weeks...
So first and foremost, great name. 10/10
A little chasey-pecky stuff is going to happen with quail. The older quail might be feeling a little bit territorial, or it could be pecking order. Your juveniles are quickly becoming adults and aunty is marking her place in the flock.
I view my quail...
First time I had quail I had that concern. "Why isn't my roo crowing?" Believe me, he'll learn and he'll never shut up again. My rooster didn't crow until his 8th or 10th week.
Third baby is almost out!
I really enjoy incubating for sure. But there's something soooo nice about the final egg hatching and then dismantling/cleaning the incubator and sticking it back into storage for a while.
We've only got 3 at this point. But we're really excited to be welcoming these ducklings to the fam. Whether we end up keeping all of them is kinda determined by their gender makeup. If we end up with a female and two drakes, that's kind of a problem. So we'll see who gets to stay!
Hey all. Interesting reads about the thermometers. Hijack away!
As for the ducklings, it's been a mixed bag. We've had 2 successfully hatch. One has pipped and is working on it. Will probably be out in a couple hours. The fourth was dead in shell this morning when I woke up.
All in all it was...
So here's a question I hadn't really considered. When I put in the safety holes, the 48 hour timer started before I'd need to look at intervening further. With the duck that did its own external pip, is it safe to assume that that one will require at least 48 hours before intervention from the...
