Looking for Impeyan Pheasant pair to purchase

Just a few words of advice, they do not do well in hot and humid climates. It got so hot this summer here in NC that I thought I was going to lose them, and that was in the high 90s which it rarely ever gets here. They are native to high cold altitudes and just do not like heat. You cwn give it...

    Black Sumatra

I've bred them for many years off and on. I pride myself on breeding birds from pure lines. With Black Sumatra's, this difficult to find these days. Too many people have crossed them out. True Sumatra's do not lay much at all, and start late March or early April depending on weather. They will...

Looking for African Dewlaps in NC

Seems to be a hard breed to find now. If anyone in NC or neighboring states are breeding them, please let me know. They must be the giant African Dewlaps. Thanks.

    Alternative food for rhea chicks?

I give Rhea and Cassowary chicks catfish or koi food for extra vitamin D. I have also fed dog food to them as a main diet for years with no problems at all. Their biggest problem with leg issues is a lack of vitamin D and exercise. Usually if a male raises them, they have no leg problems at all...

    Cassowaries

They are only as dangerous as you allow them to be. I dont go in with them :-) They cannot be tamed being solitary animals, they will always turn on their owners. They have to be fed and watered from the outside of their enclosures.

    Buying Ostrich Help

With all the information at hand online within the click of a button, it always amazes me at what people come on here and ask as opposed to just googling the information right away haha. Your question is almost so hilarious that I kept wondering if you were joking, because anyone should know...

    Cassowaries

Yes they are, the only thing not legal are things listed on appendix 2 and 3 of the CITES list, which are very threatened or endangered animals. I feel it wont be long before Cassowaries make it there, then I will have to get permits and USDA inspections to continue keeping them which will suck...

Adult pair of Emus in NC

The hen is 4 yrs old, and the male has just hit breeding age, 2 yrs. He is a bit wild, but will eat from your hand. She is much more gentle, and used to let me rub her. I haven't tried in a while. Neither are aggressive towards people, but would not make good pets for small children. It will...

    Ocellated Turkey

$3500/pair. My friend has them, and they are one of the most difficult birds to keep alive in captivity. They need large heated shelters for winter, and very large pens. They dont do well in confinement, and get bacterial infections very easy and will just drop dead. There are only 2 or 3...

How do others crush egg shells?

I was thinking of Cassowaries since thats mostly what im into, but its odd that Emus would have one either because any time mine eat corn it comes out whole. But I have read that they do have one. Cassowaries do not. In fact, if they swallow a whole apple, it will come out mostly whole, just...

How Do I tame a guinea?

Hatch it from a egg or buy it as a chick and hand raise it. Dont keep it with other Guineas if you want it really tame.

How do others crush egg shells?

I've never given it to any of my ratites, oyster shell or egg shell. They shouldn't need it if they are getting the right feed. Ratites don't have Gizzards, and cant grind up corn, shells, etc and therefore will just pass it whole, and as previously stated: could damage their intestines or cause...

which bird is best for me?

I would love to find some Reds, I dont care about the aggressiveness, I breed Cassowaries, and im used to it lol... call me crazy, I probably am, but for some reason I love dangerous animals, I just dont go in with them :-) I havent been able to find pure reds in a long time, seems like people...

    Rhea's

They arent great "pet" pets, they dont like to be touched even after being hand raised. The males get very aggressive during breeding season and can lay a nasty bite someone. The tamer the males are, the worse they are because they have no fear. If you have a large grassed pasture, then they are...

Just some photos of my Ostriches and Emu :)

Yes, the article is a bit inaccurate for sure. Emus are taller generally, and my Emus are all at least 6 ft tall. As I mentioned, one of my Cassowary females is 6 feet though. They also mentioned that the Southern(double Wattled) Cassowaries are the largest species, which is not correct. Again...

Just some photos of my Ostriches and Emu :)

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/09/cassowaries/judson-text Here is a nice article about Cassowaries in this months National Geographic magazine. You are right regarding the Zoos, it is very tragic. For years they had Cassowaries but did not breed them due to the AZA not allowing it. Well...

Not disagreeing with anything except the size, but perhaps you are right about Australian birds. I do know Australia has a different subspecies than Papua New Guinea, and it is possible they dont get as big. I have talked to individuals that have went to Australia doing research on the wild...

Just some photos of my Ostriches and Emu :)

This is actually a very common misconception mostly believed because of what is passed around on the internet by ancient research. Cassowaries are actually the 2nd largest bird in size, they are just not as tall as Emus. Emus look much larger than they are because their feathers are so puffy...
