not totally sure about the post you're replying to but I don't think I would categoize red x's as garbage, sorry.
In any event,
I have blue x black, one male is 8 ft. tall, , the other is a 9 footer.
ALL males I have ever had want to kick the snot out of you,: red, black, blue etc. and all crosses within.

Not totally sure how many birds you have, but my flock numbers over 200 now. I'd LOVE to see a true blue/back cross that tops 9 foot. Would you mind sending over some pictures next to a car or something for scale? Garbage = slow maturity, low egg output, bad attitude. How many ostriches do you have exactly?

See that bird standing in front of me in my profile image? 7 year old blue black cross, 7 feet tall and tame as all unless you get near his and his hens' nest. Reds will come from across the pasture to nail you regardless whether you are near a nest or not. Ask the one single red I had left who ended up in my freezer last weekend.

I have more than I want at this time and I never said mine TOPPED 9 foot, only that I had one that IS 9 foot.

I don't have to prove how tall my blue x blacks are, they are what they are, I have no reason to lie about it.
I'm not in competition with any one here, these ostriches are birds that I acquired at a reasonable cost to me ( saving them from a freezer) and to be honest with you, I would rather be without them at this point in time but I will never put them in a freezer either.

I also will not downgrade any variety of them in any way ....they all have their valued individual quality characteristics so I leave it at that my friend.

I would love to find some Reds, I dont care about the aggressiveness, I breed Cassowaries, and im used to it lol... call me crazy, I probably am, but for some reason I love dangerous animals, I just dont go in with them I havent been able to find pure reds in a long time, seems like people have probably bred or killed them out. But for me they are the most impressive of Ostriches, and represent just how huge and powerful a Ostrich can be. I suppose the price on them would be a bit expensive now, and I have noticed the prices are going way up on Ostriches in general. Im glad the market is slowly coming back for them. Anyway, I believe the question to this topic was which bird is best for me? As far as money, Ostriches. For pets, Emus by far. They are more gentle, eat less, and alot smaller.

If it's Emus, you made the right choice, they are so lovable and cuddly...I love them and they love the owner, but not strangers or unwanted wild life, like wild Rabbits or Rats, they just stomp them to death. lol

lol.. Paco loves everyone.. he had to greet my mailman (who is terrified of emu after a bad experience with one at a zoo).. by running up to him at the fence and laying his head on the mailman's shoulder.. he also loves every animal he meets... we have a rabbit who goes into his pen several times a day that Paco will allow to lay down next to him.. this same pen has the juvi emu, ducks, geese and occasional chicken, dog, mini equine and cats.. Paco loves them all..

Now if the critters or strangers try to get near the other adult emu we have.. it results in instant chasing and attacking.. and the juvis are little jerks in training.. they aren't as accepting of "strangers" coming into their pasture as Paco is..

My husband's boss stopped by on Friday to get a chicken from us.. it was first time he has ever been out.. Paco wanted to be petted by him too.. (the juvis wanted to be the little snots that they usually are by pecking, kicking and being little jerks) needless to say Paco is NOT the norm when it comes to our birds..
As a note.. I'm not sure if being attacked by the neighbor's dogs when he was younger imprinted all the other animals and people onto him as being "safe" with just the neighbor's dogs as being the "enemy" or not.. it is curious though that out of all of our emu he is the most accepting of other animals and people.. it's just the neighbor's dogs that send him into a panic..

It's really amazing the difference in personality in my 2 birds, I have 2 boys a 19 month old El, and a 7 month old Eddie. My older bird has been the perfect pet since the day he hatched, he's sweet , lovable and very calm. He doesn't try to stomp anything, likes the other animals, he comes when he's called and he puts himself to bed in the horse barn as soon as the sun begins to set so all I have to do is slide the door closed. He would like to spend the whole day in my lap eating grapes, he's my best bud. And then there's Eddie, I got Ed when he was about 3 months old, Ed is wild, he runs and jumps all day everyday, he stomps everything, he has deflated his rubber balls, he kicks his food bowls, any leaf that falls he hisses at and stomps, just about drove himself crazy this fall, he chases birds, dragonflies, frogs, everything. He is never calm. He will not go to bed at night, every night it's a big fight to get him in the barn, once he's in he has a snack and goes to bed next to El. I try to make sure he gets lots of petting everyday ,but even when he's in my lap being cuddled he's intense about it, he gets as tight to me as he can, closes his eyes tight and buries his face in my clothes. He's just an uptight character. I hope he mellows as he gets older for all our sake,lol

Just see the differnce, hatched your own, or buy chick or even adults ? ..Did you hatch El ? or have you had him on his own for while. and got a lot of attention ? In this case, he adopted you and the other can sense this, being the outsider...
I think, .the hatched will always be your loyal buddies and the others just look on. lol

You better get 2 girls for them... incubate them, age does not make much difference, while young..
