Help! Rhode Island Red won't move, eat, or open eyes.

How do I know if my chickens have Cocci? It’s hard to conclusively tell from symptoms what condition a chicken may have since many diseases share symptoms. Here is a general list that will hopefully help you in your diagnosis: Droopiness & listlessness Loss of appetite Pale combs and wattles...

    What NOT TO DO

This is our 3rd year of "Chicken farming". I cannot tell you all the things we did wrong over this period of time but I would like to tell you about some of them especially if you are considering raising chickens. When you think about the coop think about "how easy will this be to clean". We...

    Renew to chickens

Just a couple of comments ...Be sure when you set up your coop ... you set up a system that allows you to easily clean. We started with straw system and cleaned once a month. That took all day and when I finished I was exhausted. Plus this system encourages bugs. We changed to the sand system on...

    Molted hens no longer laying

OK They are not in a run they are free range. The food we are feeding is laying 18% food from our coop. The wellsummer is 2+ years old now. (yes I know about the 20% less laying per year) The GLW is about 1.5 yrs old. I am sure the wells isn't laying because when she did is was a huge speckled...

    Dealing with a broody hen

We had this same problem with 5 of our hens they all went super broody. We have found the only solution is isolating the hens in a seperate cage/kennel with only food & water for at least 3 days. Sometimes it takes longer, one hen took 5 days. No straw or any bedding, you just let them sit in...

    Molted hens no longer laying

Last year we had a Wellsummer that molted in sept. We figured she would not begin laying until the spring of this year (because of the winter). She never laid/layed another egg. This year we had a Gold laced wyandotte that went thru her molt in July/august. She looks great now and her comb has...

    Hawk Attack Thwarted!

They are just the silver dvr discs the kind you used to use for back up etc. One tip do not drill thru the disc as the silver comes off. Tie the disc on thru the middle with fishing line.

    Hawk Attack Thwarted!

We had the same problem with Raptors. All of our chocks are free range on 3/4 of an acre. We first had a hawk attack that killed my Husbands Favorite Chock. After it had finished with her it went after a second chicken when my husband appeared . He chased it away and up into a tree. That hawk...

    EMERGENCY - Chicks eating bedding!

Try using that material that is rubberized you put on your shelves. That's what we used so they fall down, etc. It is thick enough that I don't think they can shred it, At least ours didn't.

Big Girl is limping! Help me, please!

I did not see the bottom of the foot. Does she have a small black "thing" that looks like a mole? If so it could most likely be bumble foot that will cause limping. If she does you need to remove it or have it removed. Bumble foot only gets worse, we have removed these growths from 3 of our...

    chicken sounds

They crow almost like a rooster after they lay an egg. IT's very loud and can be heard from inside the house. Sometimes they start crowing in the process of actually laying the egg and sometimes after. We have noticed that not all our girls do "the egg song".

hawks and other birds of prey

No owl statues will not keep them from your flock. There was another thread about 2 months ago with a picture of a hawk sitting on a owl figurine looking down at the flock of chickens. So I wouldn't count on the owl idea.
