    Eggshell abnormality

They are hard and attached pretty firmly, but scrape off with some firm scraping. That seems consistent with calcium deposit to me. I don't know much since I'm a beginner, though.

    Eggshell abnormality

Does anyone know what this eggshell abnormality is, and whether or not I should be concerned? This is a Black Copper Marans egg. It's the only egg we've gotten with this problem.

Caragana arborescens (Siberian Pea Shrub or Tree) as a feed source.

I've decided to grow these shrubs/small trees as a source of feed for my flock because I've heard it mentioned in a few sources: http://plants.usda.gov/plantguide/pdf/pg_caar18.pdf http://www.pfaf.org/leaflets/peatree.php...

    Run construction questions.

I have a couple of questions about run construction that I haven't come across exact answers for in this forum: 1. Is there any concern about toxic chemicals in treated lumber, or are the new preservatives safe? I'd like to use treated 4 x 4s and 2 x 4s, but I don't want the chickens pecking...

Nest box height and need for roosts.

Thanks for the photos! Did you mean they are 2' off the floor or 2"? The reason I asked is in other threads I read discussion about whether or not to have what they were calling roosts in front of the nest box. They were serving the same purpose as your landings.

For heavy breeds, how high above the floor of the coop would nest boxes have to be to warrant roosts being placed in front of them?

    Farm cats and chickens.

Thanks for all of the great advice everyone! I'm starting from scratch with chicks (no spontaneous generation pun intended) so, I don't have any hens to chase the cats off. I guess I'll keep them well protected and try to introduce the cats to them as often as I can (staying with them) until...

    Farm cats and chickens.

(I searched the forums for this but I came up with so many results I decided to ask the question myself.) I'm sure many or all of you have the same situation as us. We have five large, healthy, immunized, neutered tom cats on our farm. They are very friendly to people, and even to our two...
