Could you explain what you mean by hatchery breeds being bold and having no respect for humans? I got her as a fertilized egg from a local poultry farm with all pasture raised chickens. My chickens are still pasture raised. I know Boo's relatives came from a larger hatchery at some point, but...
Hello everyone!
So my Gold laced Orpington, Boo, is 8.5 months old. I hatched her from an incubator and she pretty much hatched out in my hands..so I have been around her every day since. She's so beautiful and I love her so much and she laid her first egg on January 12th and since has laid 15...
My chickens also have a large backyard with an herb garden for them and kitchen scraps. They are 100% free range also. And considering I only have 1 hen and 1 roo that they are getting more than enough calcium. I sure wouldn't want to harm them! So I guess it does make sense to switch back to...
I followed the instructions on the back of the feed I'm using. Purina organic feed. It states to switch to layer feed at 18 weeks so that's what I did. If it is harmful why would they put those instructions on the back? Same for Dumor organic. Says start feeding laying pellets "to prepare for...
Hi all!
So, I have researched all over trying to find the answer I'm looking for, but it is a kind of confusing scenario. I have an 8 month old RIR named Dexter and have had him since he was 3 days old. I also have one Buff Orpington pullet named Boo that is almost 6 months old and hatched her...
So, here's a little back story: Dexter, my eldest, about 13 wks old hasn't had it easy. She was hatched with another chick and they were best friends. The chick sadly was snagged by a hawk. Got another chick a few weeks later and Dexter acted like a mother to it..sadly it had the same fate about...
Hi! This is my Rhode Island Red, Dexter. She (I hope) is about 13 weeks old. If she were a cockerel would she be crowing by now? I'm also adding another pic of my 3 week old EEgger chick. It may not be good enough to tell, but she's already growing quite the comb and my buff Orpington (hatched...
My hen loves my red Russian kale. It gets huge too. I also have marigolds because they're a good antioxidant and make egg yolks bright orange as a bonus. Also herbs such as parsley, dill, sage, oregano, thyme, bee balm, lavender and mint. The some of those herbs can be put in the nesting box and...
None hatched but I went to the man where I got the eggs and got two chicks that are "sisters" (I hope) and were from the same batch of eggs I failed to hatch. Sad it didn't work out but in love with my babies :,) thank you all for the kind words and advice!
My little baby didn't make it :( I knew that much blood didn't look right and it never moved or made another peep so I assume it pipped through a blood vessel and died. I still have two eggs in the bator on day 23 and no internal pip. Ugh I feel like the worst chick mom ever! :,(
They were due to hatch yesterday and this is the first to pip. The other 2 still nothing. So I'm hoping they're just late hatchers. I'm so excited I can't stand it but am going to leave it alone for a few hours and check back. Thank you for the advice!!
It's been 24+ hours since internal pip. It is not moving at all or making a sound. I'm scared it's dead but don't know how long I should wait until I intervene. Thanks!
