I know this is an old thread.... and my question might be too stupid... is it too late to sow winter cover crops? I live in Northern California. The temperature drops down to 35-40s, but during the day, it can go up to 60s. We don’t have snow. My 7 chickens are not caged in and they run free...
Wow glad to know it doesn't happen just to our family! Now reading this thread makes me believe it's a combination of heat and the breed white leghorn! We have 7 girls, 2 white leghorn, 2 golden sex Link, 2 black sex Link and 1 Welsummer. The last few days here we had over 90 deg, and my hubby...
Found this old thread when my girl wanted to tag her favorite chick. Awesome & inspiring idea here. Right when we were ready to leave the house to get the leg bands, I had an idea! See the cheap key chain ring? It's adjustable and fits comfortably. Obviously it's labor intensive if you need to...

Our coop is moderately sized for 6-8 chickens, and the heat plate I have can house 10 chicks with ease, but splitting/sectioning the coop or the heat plate may deem impossible, at least for someone not handy at all like me.
Hello, I'm new here too. After reading through the threads, I'm not sure if I should forget about my new plan.... anyone weights in your thoughts?
I already have six 2-weeks old chicks (2 black sex links, 2 white sex links and 2 white leghorns) in a small coop. The original plan is to have my...
Oh lazy gardener, thank you for clarifying. I didn't know the fermented seeds were different from the fermented feeds!! How stupid me! My very first batch of fermented stuff was indeed seeds which I let my girl hand fed the babies as snack. So far 6 of them together had 1 tablespoon twice. I...
Hello I'm new here! Sorry in advance if I asked same old questions but with a five year old next to me, it's close to impossible to read through all the threads. I've been reading a lot on fermented feeds and started having my girl to give a very small amount (1 TSP) to 6 of my one-week old...
Thanks! Can't believe they are already one week old. This morning when my girl brought them some fermented seeds treat, they ran up to her! Took them over 3 days to warm up to us. So worth the effort!
I heard leghorns are not children friendly.... They are so cute right now, but I don't want my girl to get hurt later, or to find out they are all boys... we are debating to exchange them to either gold or black sex link pullets. At least with all the reading I know how to tell boys from girls...
