I'm at the vet with Marigold for her re-check. She has been on her antibiotics and Metacam for 2 weeks. Her swollen abdomen has gone down. Her heart and lungs sound good. She has lost about 1 pound so we'll have to start weighing her weekly. She will continue her course of medications for...
She's beautiful! I would separate her from the flock and watch her closely. If she's with the flock she'll try and hide any symptoms she may be having. Keep her separate and wait until she lays an egg again. Maybe still contact a local vet just in case.
Make sure she is eating, drinking and pooping normally. Separate her from the others so you can monitor her. Give her free choice access to crushed oyster shell along with her layer mash. Make sure she has access to sunshine because that helps the hens absorb the calcium. If it continues take...
Egg Yolk Peritonitis
by expert Elliott Simpson on January 15, 2015 category Backyard Poultry
Egg Yolk Peritonitis, sometimes referred to as Egg Peritonitis (or ‘EYP’ for short), is a common condition seen in backyard hens of all ages, from the point of lay onwards. It is an infection established...
I have a hen, Marigold a production RIR 2 years old, who has been laying very wrinkly and thin shelled eggs for the past several months. Then, I was finding what looked like egg yolk all over the nest and eggs. I started watching the girls more closely and isolated the one hen, Marigold, who I...
I recently lost my very friendly white leg horn roo named Ranger Roo. He would let me pick him up and pet him and we would go for walks. I was so upset to lose him. I just hatched 3 of his babies so I'm really hoping to get another really nice roo.
I keep a bantam cochin with my big girls. They listen to him and respect him, he warns them from danger and he doesn't cause feather damage to the girls. He is very respectful of me. He is a great little roo with a big brave heart and personality. I will always keep a bantam cochin roo with my...
I was feeding my mixed flock layer mash because I kept being told by the feed store that it would be ok. My Roosters started dying. Their symptoms were lameness and weight loss. I had a necropsy done and the calcium was affecting them (gout and kidney issues) and they were dying. I am so...
This update is much later but Little Red never bounced back. She was anemic and wasn't getting better with her treatments. We decided to have her euthanized. It was a hard decision. The vet said she had spent hen syndrome which is commonly seen in factory hens. We are still going to get some...
Great article! I have been very slowly beginning my rooster flock with the six "hens" that were sold to me that ended up being Roosters. I love those bad boys!
I use an infra red heat lamp and heated pet dish in my coop. I worry that the red lamp keeps the girls laying in the Winter. I want them to have a break. We also use thick clear plastic for their outdoor courtyard with straw so they can get outside and scratch around.
Thank you! My girls are all still laying, and 5 out of 6 of my red sex links are still moulting! I wish they would slow down. I live in Eastern Ontario Canada and our Winters are cold so I have a heat lamp in for them since they are still missing feathers from their moult. It's a red heat lamp...
I took my hen Gertrude to the vet last night with the symptoms reported by many here, swollen abdomen, dirty bum, not laying.
I showed the vet a picture of her droppings which looked like rubbery white with fleshy looking peach pit sized globs. She had a very fast heart rate and was breathing...
I'm going through the exact same thing with one of my hens Little Red Maisie.
She is on day three of her calcium/antibiotics/hand feeding regime. She is still so sleepy. We have a recheck appointment at the vet tomorrow night to see how she is doing. I hope she makes it. She's such a sweet...
