    Frustrated with lack of eggs!

I actually have 3 cats already, all are great mousers but they don't seem to deter the squirrels at all. I've been spraying through squirrels with the jet sprayer when I see them and that keeps them away for a day or so, but they always come back.

    Frustrated with lack of eggs!

It's true haha! My hens can be pretty loud some days. But my neighbors are pretty nice.

    Frustrated with lack of eggs!

I wish my hens would eat the squirrel! I'd consider getting a rooster but again, I live in the city lol.

    Frustrated with lack of eggs!

Just during the day, squirrels are diurnal so they're not a problem at night. I thought about putting out squirrel bait with poison, but I don't want to also poison someone's cat or dog if they ate the squirrel. And that still wouldn't really fix the problem. My husband suggested a squirrel...

    Frustrated with lack of eggs!

It wouldn't make a difference, there are literally hundreds of squirrels in my neighborhood. I definitely could trap or kill it, but another one would just move in and take its place.

    Frustrated with lack of eggs!

I am so frustrated with my hens right now! I have 2 RIR, 2 Barred Rock, and 2 Americaunas. The Americaunas are almost 3 years old and the other 4 are about 7 months. The older ladies finished a molt recently and at least one has begun laying again. The new ladies have all begun laying, they were...

Rhode Island Red: Hen or roo?

There's kind of a better picture.

Rhode Island Red: Hen or roo?

I've heard of that collar! I'd love a rooster, maybe he would beat up the squirrels that steal the food, lol. And it would be fun to hatch out some chicks! But I'm not sure the collar would be enough to not annoy my neighbors.

Rhode Island Red: Hen or roo?

The neck feathers are rather long, and have a green tinge, but not above the tail at all. It is a rather dominant bird - very bold coming right up to us in the yard, and it bosses around its age-mates, but not the older chickens.

Rhode Island Red: Hen or roo?

That's encouraging! I live in the city so we can't have roosters. I'm hoping it's a hen with a fabulous, beautiful comb haha! But it's not crowing at all, not even a peep. We have our back windows open all night until about 8am, one is in our bedroom, so I'm sure we'd notice crowing.

Rhode Island Red: Hen or roo?

No signs of crowing yet. No spurs, either. Do yours have spurs?

Rhode Island Red: Hen or roo?

This RIR has a much bigger wattle and comb than my other one, which I know is a hen. Is it a rooster? It's about 20 weeks old now.

Chicken suddenly being picked on, what to do?

And now Spaghetti came out of the coop and things seemed fine, but they started fighting again! Do I grabbed Spaghetti and brought her inside, but I can't just keep her here - I don't have anywhere to put her!

Chicken suddenly being picked on, what to do?

I posted recently about egg eating but now I have an entirely different problem - one of my Americaunas is picking on the other one a lot this morning! Their names are Parmesan and Spaghetti, for reference (my 4-year-old named them, lol) They're usually besties, I had to take them together when...

Nosy hen watches others lay, and egg eating! Help!

Yes, my recipe is made up of oat groats, hard red and soft white wheat, flax seeds, whole corn, black sunflower seeds, green lentils, split green peas, and kelp powder. I stick the kelp powder onto the other grains with some coconut oil. I was previously also adding millet, but from what I could...

Nosy hen watches others lay, and egg eating! Help!

I also feed freeze dried mealworms as a treat a few times a week, just a handful scattered on the ground or in the coop.

Nosy hen watches others lay, and egg eating! Help!

I make my own whole grain feed - I used a calculator online to make sure I've got the right protein percentage and it's right around 19.5%. I also feed calcium and grit free choice in separate containers and they free range in my back yard.

Nosy hen watches others lay, and egg eating! Help!

I had some wooden eggs in there just to encourage laying IN the nesting box, because they also like to lay on the floor occasionally. I took them out when I did the mustard egg though. Maybe I'll put them back in.
